Default High pitched squealing noise.

Hey all,

I got my TC about a month ago, and I've been very happy with it. The only two weird things that have happened so far are the creaking noise in the roof (which was explained on here) and a high pitched squealing noise I sometimes hear. It sounds like a fan belt or something like that, really high pitched, and sounds like it's coming out of the center console, or a little to the right. I've tried turning off the AC, turning off the fan, closing the radio cover, but it doesn't seem to do anything. And I can't tell why it starts, it just does every once in a while.

Has anyone else had this, or have any idea what causes it?

Default drivebelts?

It might just be a loose drive belt.. they always squeal (comes and goes).. i wouldn't let it go long since that will overheat it and then it will snap.. take it to the dealer, you're under warranty.. plus they can check the tension.. I've seen on many cars that a quick tension adjustment can fix it... or at worst they slap a new one on.. nice part of this tc engine.. it's the camry engine.. parts are already available..

let us know what happens and what ya find out.. shouldn't be anything big..

I get a faint squeaking sound whenever I hit the accelerator in gear. It doesn't do it when I'm in neutral. I have a 5sp. I'm going to take it into the dealer tomorrow to have them take a look. Do you have a 5sp? Does your squeak happen all the time, or only if you hit the accelerator? Mine is pretty faint - I can't hear it at all when the radio's on.

I think it's the drive belt. Take it to the dealer.

My friend has a '92 Celica, he was driving on the freeway and his car made a noise like yours. He thought it was the van next to him. Then he got on the road and it continued. He showed his dad, but when he did the sound went away. His dad put WD40 on it, but it didn't do much. Then the sound got worse while he was driving to the dealer, but when he got there, the sound went away. All the guy did was tighten the belt and it was fine, he didn't even charge my friend for it too.

If it happens on bumpy roads and if it's coming from the center console, then the CD compartment cover (the one that slides open and closed) is the culprit. When you hear the noise, try holding onto the cover and if the noise goes away, then you've found it. I have this problem in mine, the dealer tried to fix it by putting dampeners behind the console, but that didn't fix it (they just ended up scratching my center console - will be replaced by them).

If it happens when you accelerate, I'm suspecting that is just the noise from the intake.

I think you are replying to me?

I will be taking it to the dealer tomorrow and having someone ride with me to listen for it. Thanks for the help.

I agree with what rounder was saying about the center console stereo cover. The exact same noise came from my scion tC as well. When my stereo cover was closed, the noise went away. When the stereo cover was opened, it made a really high pitched rattling noise. When you held onto the open stereo cover, the noise stopped.

What I suspect happened was that when I initially purchased the car, it came with a 6 cd changer. I told them I didn't want it and to replace it with the standard cd player. They probably did a rush job with it and didn't tighten something down.

After bringing it into Toyota, their fix was to "resecure bezel" as stated on the invoice. No more noise.

As for the moon roof, the snap crackling and popping noises are progressively getting worse. They're calling in a Toyota Tech advisor for my car tomorrow. Hopefully they'll figure that one out too.

I also hear a slight squeak, but it's more like a little burst of air or something. Only happens when i put it in gear and start to apply gas. I'm guessing maybe it's the clutch or synchros engaging. I've heard it on my stepdads pontiac as well when he first bought it. *prays this isn't a recall issue...*

Yeah, I hear a little squeak...it sounds more like a whoooosh though when I accelerate the car. It sounds sortof like the sound a turbo makes...but my car doesn't have a turbo. Someone said something about the intake? Could it be that?

its the radio cover. Next time you hear it of the cover is open just push on it, like push it back and it will stop. I hear it all the time and its so annoying

Our 2002 Camry has that noise too whenever accelerating... To me it sounds something electronic... But I usually ignore it... (Like the sound when-you-push-the-CD-Drive-in-when-it-has-no-power type thing...)

It happens when braking too I think... We also have a 2004 Camry but I havn't noticed anything on that yet...

The tech said that it was just gear whine, nothing to get worried over. It's pretty faint; you can really only hear it if you listen for it with the radio off, but it can get annoying just because you know it's there.

It couldn't hurt to get a second opinion though, especially since you can go to the headquarters. It might be something else. Let me know what you find out, thanks.

The whoosh noise is coming from the intake and I have no problem with it. It's similar to that sweet noise that comes from turbos.

The squeaking noise is coming from the cd compartment cover and they need to issue a TSB for it ASAP. They attempted to fix mine by adding felt underneath the ENTIRE center console but in the process, scratched up parts of the fascia. They also didn't fix my squeaking problem on the compartment cover. Bastards.
