Default How important is the "break-in" period

Reason I ask, is that I'm picking up my new '08 tC from the dealership in my hometown (1 hr away) tomorrow, then Sunday morning I'll be driving back to college on the NYS thruway (65mph speed limit; everyone goes 75-80). Will it be ok for my car to drive these speeds (65-75 for one hour)? It's a manual, and currently has 100 miles on it.

rule of thumb usually is to vary the RPMs. and not so much about the speed. but you might want to keep it around 65. and since you have the manual, i would say every few mins, go from 5th down to 4th, then back up to 5th. of course just make sure you're not going TOO fast where you will be revving too high when you come down to 4th.

then the other side of the coin is, people will say, new cars really dont "need" a break in anymore.

haha...not sure if i helped =P

drive like you stole it. engine will break in just fine.

just dont slam on the brakes. the brakes are the most important thing when breaking in a car.

For the Brakes, I would suggest getting them warm then and then gradually getting the car to around oh, start at 10 mph, then slam on brakes, but don't stop. Then get to 25, slam on brakes, but don't stop... then get to 45 or so, slam on brakes, but don't stop... But slow the car down to like, 5mph, but make sure you don't stop. This is the proper way to break in your brakes... otherwise you get squeeky squeeky when you stop!

newer cars dont really need a ton of break in, but like posted above, the brakes are the main focus.

just be reasonable with the tc, i took it easy on mine for the first 1000 miles and she runs like the day i picked her up.

you should be fine.

Another way to vary the RPM's a bit is to just clutch in every once in a while and let it hit idle for a second or two and rev match it back to gear

No Body wants a Test Drivin car. Thats like having premarital sex, but insisting you marry a Virgin.

Mine came off the truck, straight into PDI, and then into my hands with under 5 miles on it.

First 1000 miles on my 06 tC i babied it. Slower speeds, slow acceleration across the band, no downshifting.

lol

Soon as 1001 miles I started driving it how I wanted to, haven't noticed a problem at all.

Mine had a mile on it too...........

Just drive it normal and it will be fine..............no getting on it or hard braking for a good month..........that way your drive trane will last a good long time.........and change the oil every 3-5000 miles.......and tranny fluid every 20-30000..........and car should last a long time...........and have your brakes checked at say 20000 to see if they are in need of repair before they fail...........which is usually at around 30000-40000 depending on how you drive.........these simple things will keep you in a nice car for a long time.

i think most of us tc owners got the cars off a truck. i know when i bought mine (back in 04) there were absolutely NONE on the lots so every tc that came in was already sold. my tc had 2 miles on it when i picked it up.

I bought an '08 yesterday and it had 12 miles on it (although 5 of those miles were from my test drive), so I guess my car is technically used . . .

I intend to take it pretty easy during the break in period, but given that the first oil change isn't until 5,000 miles I can't imagine that there's much of a break in period. In the past a lot of new cars needed an oil change at 1,000 (after the break in) so that all of the metal flakes and filings could be removed from the engine. Toyota doesn't seem to worried about that.

I drove mine carefully and varied the RPM's for the first 5k. The break in period may or may not be bunk, but I'm keeping this car for a while. It was worth driving slow in the beginning.

If you don't care about your car, drive it however. If you want it to last, pretend there's a break-in period on the off chance that it's not all hype.

Oh--mine came straight off the truck, too.

I took my tC's "virginity". Every mile after it was unloaded onto the dealer's lot was put on with me behind the wheel. Back to the topic, for the first 1000 miles drive like a responsible person and leave plenty of room to stop that way you can properly break in your bakes. The engine just needs to stay in normal operating rpm's and you should be fine.

I got mine with 3 miles on it, it just won't let me break her in slow... before I know it she's climbing her way up the RPMs... God she's a wild one.
