Default How long should your brakes last?

SO I've been hearing this squeek come from my brakes the past few days, just when i press on the lightly. Now, when i started hearing this in my old car, i automatically assumes brake pads and would just get them replaced. But i only had to do that once, and i had the car for about 2 years. My tc I got back in August, so it seems strange to me that the brake pads would be going already. It could be the brake fluid, maybe a clog or something cuz i know the fluid is in there. So i plan to take it up to the dealership when i get a chance, i was just wondering if this had happend to anyone else.

Sometimes semi metallic brakes squeak even when they are good. Look at the brake pads through the calipers and see if there is any pad left, there should be plenty.

It really depends on how you drive your car.

From your first sentence, are you one of those brakers who always comes gently a stop? Meaning, you usually just use light pressure over a good distance to come to stop (the ideal way)?

Ironically enough, good brakers like you sometimes have to suffer with glazed rotors. Not really a big deal... I think a few firm braking experiences from something like 60-10 might fix that right up. Don't slam on the brakes, but use a good amount of pressure.

I'm not 100% sure that's the problem or solution, but it might work. good luck, let us know how it goes

I say check the amount of pad you have left, and then that should tell you if you need to replace them or not. Unfortunatley, some brakepads to make noise. You can go to autozone and pick up some break silencer if you want to try that out.

Yeh they make some silencer that you can spread on the pads to quiet them down.

How many miles have you put on the brake pads? Are these the original pads and original rotors?

Noise coming from the brakes can usually mean several things.
1) The pads aren't bed in properly
2) The pads need to be replaced
3) The rotor is no good
4) There may be dirt wedged in between the pads and the rotors

In any case, everyone wears their brake pads differently based on how you drive. Like someone said, the semi-metallic pads have a tendency to squeal. The anti-squal gel is usually not going to help much, but if it helps you sleep better at night, go ahead and throw it on there. First thing to do however is simply check how much pad is left (which is VERY simple to do on our cars...just look...unlike other cars where you have to take the wheels off!)

Could be just normal wear and tear. I heard a squeek coming from my brakes too like last year and my tC wasn't even a year old yet. I took it into the dealership and they just cleaned the brake pads and they told me it had some dirt in it. They were even nice enough to resurface my rotors for me. After that, the noise was gone! Hope that helps.

yeah, i check the pads, no problems there. took it to the dealership, they just sprayed em down with the power hose real fast and dried em. squek was gone. So i guess it was just dirt from the snow or something. they said the pads should last for a while, probably longer than my 3 free oil changes, so thats in the 12K-15K range

Im still on stock pads, 17k miles, no squeeking yet, but i know they are worn down.

I know someone with 50k miles on stock pads, and he is just about ready for new ones.

i'm at about 30K.. stock pads still look pretty good.. does squeek a little on occasion..

best guess for you and me are glazed rotors... try taking a light sandpaper and rough the surface up a little. it'll help.

Could it be the weather? I notice that my brakes squeak early in the morning (when car is cold). By the time I get home in the afternoon (when its warmer outside), the squeaks are gone.

(Maybe it's just me? )

Sounds like it was just dirt. Mine started squeeking at one point, only when pressing softly. A resurface and cleaning off the pads fixed that right up.

I squeek too. But I'm thinking its sand and road salt; all it needs is good clean. But if I do need new pads I'll look into sport brakes down the road for better performance.

Wow, i feel bad. I just replaced mine at 21k. they were worn down to the metal and the rotors were covered in hot spots.

As for the OP is it a light squeak or is it a heavy, onset, grinding noise? If its light it probably just sand or something deposited into your pad that turned into glass.
