Default Hydro shield for SRI?

Was thinking about getting a hydro shield for my INJEN SRI Im getting in the next day or so..was wondering if its needed. I Don;t know if water can get in there or not, I never actually noticed if water would come in contact with it so opinions would be helpful. Also im not sure what size to get http://www.autoanything.com/air-filt...A2582A0A0.aspx ? thanks guys.

Water CAN get in. There's a recent thread where someone got water in their cylinders from a truck passing his car in a flooded street, throwing a big wave of water over the hood. He had Injen CAI + bypass, and water either douched his filter or the bypass, which is right where the filter would be for SRI. Of course best thing is not to drive on flooded streets unless necessary, but if you do - in either configuration the filter is vulnerable to thrown-up water rushing through the gap between hood & fender.

IMO the hydro-shield wouldn't prevent this, if anything it would restrict airflow into the SRI.

However, Injen does makes a "heat shield" which IMO would make heat soak worse not better, but would make a nice splash guard when installed open side down on a SRI or CAI filter.

i doubt it'll help an SRI since it's so high up, BUT there's always a chance. why don't you just install it as a CAI? do they not come with the 2nd piece anymore? i know for the 05-06s you had to buy the CAI version and if you wanted to install as SRI then you just don't use the extra piping. oh yea, i have the injen hydroshield for my CAI.

Well I am getting the whole unit that switches from cai to sri, main reason i was installing it as a sri is because it is the only way I know how to install it and really dont feel like taking my bumper off at the time. I have looked at the heat shield and thought about it making a good splash guard too, but chose the hydroshield becasue I am not worried about the water so much, just protecting the filter from stray droplits of water which may hit it, and keep my filter cleaner, since I live on dusty dirty roads where amish are my neighbors.

I have searched around the forums and found like 3 topics maybe that talk about the injen sri mode rubbing and causing the filter to get a hole, is there anyway to solve this? I saw someone said they pushed it back a little, was jsut wondering if that is a good perminant solution since it was not discussed. Thanks guys.

you don't have to take off your bumper to install it as a CAI, i would just do it as a CAI since you already paid for it. plus, the install is very easy, it's one of the easiest things to install on a car.

If he's going to install the second pipe for CAI, he's most definitely have to take the bumper off. There is a mounting point that is only reachable by taking that bumper off - and it's even better when you take out the splash guard from the wheel well.

IMO, there's no reason to not go with a full CAI. The area the filter is located is totally enclosed (read: enclosed, not sealed) and if you're really paranoid, that's what the hydroshield or bypass valve is for. I still have never been worried once about my CAI hydro locking my engine and I've driven through some real downpours lately.

As long as you don't drive through 2' of water, you shouldn't have any trouble.

Of course, if you do have trouble, you can't blame me.

One more quick question, the filter that comes with it does require you to oil the filter correct? My friend got one and claims you don't need to oil the filter and his has no oil, don't know how accurate his statement is, but when I install it i would like to know if it needs the oil and what happens if there is little to no oil on it, thanks guys.

hey.. uhm... you don't have to take the bumper off.... just put it on the jack.. remove wheel.. and move inner plastic fender pieces out of the way..

yes... the only no-oil filter i know is AEM's

when you purchase the CAI, the filter is pre-oiled... you only need to re-oil after cleaning it... it helps capture the dirt and dust and holds it in the filter.
