Default I Need help

Here is my issue. I was struggling to find out what was wrong with my car. It wouldn't go in and out of gears. I thought it was the slave from reading a few things. It wasn't that. So I had it taken to a shop. They told me it's the clutch and the clutch master cylinder. I wasn't happy with them because they couldn't explain why it's both. So I had them do the master first. It didn't work still and when they replaced the master cylinder, now the clutch pedal has almost 3 inches of no pressure on the pedal and then you get pressure. I got the clutch done elsewhere and the pedal still feels horrible. I got it back to the first shop because the new master was leaking already and had trouble engaging and disengaging. They said there wasn't anything wrong but they made an adjustment and it engages a little further from the floor. The clutch engages maybe two inches from the floor. I'm so baffled by these people. I know something's wrong.
Could a second generation master cylinder work in a first generation? That's one thing I just thought of today, through all this frustration.

The pushrod on the MC should be adjustable. You should be able to adjust out most of the play. It may still feel different though since you changed the clutch too.

Thank you. I feel like they didn't do the job properly and refuse to fix it.
I'll look at getting it adjusted.
