I Test Drove a TC Today
You are a college student, why do you need that much trunk space? 95% of the time when I had a huge trunk in my 98 Accord, I had nothing in it but my backpack. Fold down the seats, I moved my tC from NC to CA and packed a lot of stuff in the car with the seats folded down. There is plenty of space in the tC for stuff when you need to pack it in. I've packed a 10 ft ladder in there, a willow tree, bike, you get the picture. You are comparing the car to MB and BMW....WRX...a hear a lot of whining for a guy that is getting a free car from his parents. Don't want to sound harsh but you kind of set yourself up for it.
If value is not as important and fit and finish is more important, I suggest an Audi A3 2.0t. The tC interior is ok for the price but it is on the cheap side when it comes to interior material. Carpet is cheap, seats get weird water marks if rain gets on it, some like the interior some don't. No two people can agree on design style. Seriously, it sounds like you can afford looking into an A3. I live in Germany and I see them around everywhere since they have been out longer here. The sport hatch look is more popular here. Besides where I am from in Los Angeles, tC s are everywhere, esp college age kids driving them. But if you would rather save 12k and get a Tc, perhaps learn how to invest the 12k and get a great return by the end of your college days. A college friend invested 10k in 1999 and got it up to 400k while we were at UCLA, all within 15 months. Now thats what you go to college to learn how to do. It all depends on what is more important to you and the person writing the check. Good luck with your car hunt. The tC is a good car, but don't expect perfection from a car that can be had under 17k.

"If your old man bought you a beater POS, you should be happy"
Yeah, a beater is nice to have as a first car. I used to push grocery carts out of my way with my 1998 corolla haha. Did not have to worry about the car getting dented. No power steering and a muffler that was so loud you could hear it two blocks away....and no it wasn't modified..those were the days. The best time was when I had to valet that beast in Century City.

I had a job as a bagel maker at my local bagel shop. Yeah it was fun sometimes but it was hard work. The pay was a pathetic $7.25 an hour and most of it was taxed..... haha the funny thing is when i started to buy things, i'd look at it in hours... "oh ____ this dinner is costing me 3 hours of work...."
i'm not sure about getting the tires.... are they really THAT bad? I don't understand how toyota can fit such bad tires onto their cars if they're really taht bad....
but i don't know any better than you guys so i'll take ur advice
haha, i had a '95 hyundai accent... it ran great and me and my friends used to do powerslides when it snowed.... tons of good times in that thing too bad my sister totaled it
but i don't know any better than you guys so i'll take ur advice

switch ur wheels asap if you're planning on driving in even a slight mist
i wont blame the death of my tc on the wheels but it *ahem* didnt drive well in the rain period...
its an awesome car the best overall you can get brand spankin new for this price...
other option is to look at a used upgrade but then you may get a p.o.s. but scion customer service is incredible and the community is pretty fun too

If you are mad at taxes now.. just wait till you make more money. First, you end up moving where the pay is good only to find the cost of living is ridiculous, then uncle sam starts taking the big bites outta your **** :D Trust me, when you start paying 20 grand or more per year in taxes, plus higher costs of living, you will be wishing you could still have it so easy

And you should be Hella lucky to get a NICE car at ur age and FREE!!!!......

I told him straight up, "i'll take whatever you give me."
even if he thinks this scion is the best way to go, i feel really really really really bad taking this much money from him... especially w/ tuition as well. I'll pay him back later in life with a real job.....
I want a motorcycle too... damn with this new car i guess i'll have to put taht on hold....

Try paying about 40k in taxes each year. It's not fun when you make 100k and get whacked 40k. Life at home is the greatest money wise. When you get on your own, you've got rent or mortgage..1000+, utilities 350+, insurance 100-200, food 400, health insurance (sky is the limit). So just the basics of adult life and you are already set back 24-30k of after tax money. It's a big shocker when you see your pay check decimated and you wonder what happen. My cousin who is a college student with no job can afford to modify his car more than me, someone with a full time job. I think when you're in a university, you get dreams of making it big but we tend to forget how big an impact big brother has on our take home. Enjoy the easy life while you can while at home, it doesn't get any better.

My first car (Mustang) I bought from my neighbor for $400.
I had to have it towed across the street because it didn't even run.
I spent the next 9-months rebuilding everything after school to get it to even start.
Yeah, griping about the "shortcomings" of a new tC gets ZERO sympathy from me for an 18 year old getting it from daddy...

I wish my parents had paid for my tc
You shouldn't make too much of a deal about what your parents buy you. Most of the things you've mentioned it's just a matter of getting used to it. I hate the throttle delay and the clutch but i know it's just a matter of getting used to it. My old car, well it was my dad's but I always drove it, a 96 Ford Aspire (total _____ magnet) had no throttle delay and the clutch started to engage the gears about where the tC does but wouldn't stop until where the tC's clutch pedal ends. First couple of days i had the tC I had a little trouble controlling it w/o launching it
But again. That's all just a matter of getting used to.
