Default i wish tC is 6 spd

i did not know that even a corolla, and matrix has 6 spd variation. What's up with this!!!

Why didn't they make tC 6 spd..dammit!.

If they gave the cheap car everything, nobody would buy the expensive car. Just like HID and a Navigation system.

It's a damn bargain even with the 5sp.

I still like my car even though its 5 speed... I rarely use the 5th gear anyway since im always going back and forth from work - school - house.

Both Matrix XRS & Corolla XRS share the Celica GT-S engine & trans. That engine has a narrow power band so the 6spd is needed to keep it in that power range. Now the tC has a big power band so the 5spd is all it needs. Adding a 6th gear would jack up the price & the weight a little. If you want a 6spd should have just got a corolla xrs.

yea it does kinda suck with only 5 gears... my buddies have 6 so when we race i would run out of gears and they'll have 5thgear thats not OD but 6..... so i would have to down shift to speed through traffic with them

i agree with chucksu... more gears doesn't mean better transmission, or better speed, or anything like that. the RSX-S has a six speed which, at the time when he bought it, i thought was so cool... but he told me that it's annoying because he has to shift too much... like going block to block with stop signs, he has to go to third right before he has to stop or else he's creeping up with the car at 4500 rpms... he actually wished it was a five speed.

for a car that has a very narrow power band (s2000) or for big v8's that need the last gear for top speed (BMW 540i) six speeds are necessary... i don't think a six speed would fit on the tC at all. even on my IS a six speed was unnecessary unless you turboed the car and need to extend the gearing space

well, first off you are talking about two different engines, one has "iift" and one doesnt. although one is a 2.4 liter and one isnt.

the matrix does have a nice engine in it (same as the new lotus elise), and would be neat to see it in the tc.

BUT, i think we all are just seeing the begining of the capabilities of the 2.4 liter in the tc.

just my .02

Also to add not all V8 cars use that 6th gear for speed. Its like the old C5 Corvettes. They had 6 Gears but top speed was reached in 5th because 6 was such a low ratio that the engine could not produce the power needed to gain more speed. Of course that is in stock form to. Also from what I have read the tC has a some what close ratio gearing. So thats why ppl think it needs another gear. If they change the final drive some I think that would be better then another gear.

Default 6th gear

I agree to a 6th gear or lower ratio. I drive freeways all the time to work....63,000 miles every 18months. It has plenty of toque to lower the gear ratio....or the 6th gear would reduce the engine RPM at 70mph. In turn, that'll probably increase the gas mileage too.

Default 75 m/h at 4000 rpm, that's too much!

why did i feel that tC need another gear? it's because rpm runs too high at high speeds. For example, at 75 m/h, rpm runs about at 4000, which i think is really high compare to other cars. This may lead to a noise problem once our cars get aged. Well, it's true that torque on tC is not even comparable to what's on XRS, which is around 120 ??, yet having an extra gear would not hurt. Well, besides that, it's an awsome car.

Yeah I could see that. Mostly just need to drop that final drive some. 4000rpm @ 75mph is to crazy . I drove a V6 Mustang with a 5spd & that thing was rolling 3,100rpm @ 80mph. I can understand the diff between a V6 & I4 but 4000rpm I find to be to crazy. Thats a whole 2,600rpm from red line.

70mph in the manual revs @3300rpms vs the auto @2800. i agree the 6th gear would've added a more relax cruising speed but then the price and weight would've gone up a bit.

also, people forget what it was like driving a 4cylinder with 5 gears and not 6. i remember being @4000+ rpms in a 98 gsr at 80mph and then going to a celica in 00 with a 6th gear @80 that's 1000rpms lower.

yes, the IS has long gears but it also needs a 6th gear. they should have put the getrag supra tranny cause at 80 i feel like shifting into another gear.

They should have made it like a semi and have 18 gears, those have madd speed

I don't know why you guys are saying 4k@75 mph, I will make sure to look next time but I know it's not that bad. I believe I was around 3500 at 75.

Geeze, why do people complain about the most stupid things? I will agree the 5th gear's ratio is pretty short compared to other cars in it's class, but it does give you the ability to pass people without the need to downshift.

This car has higher build quality, presentation, and performance than anything else in it's class, period. The interior is quieter than an rx-8, and the plastic doesn't lint up like it does.

It's one thing to have a discussion, but it's another to have a "omg this car should have had this, I'm not happy with my purchase now" kind of conversation. If you don't like something about the car - maybe you should have passed over the tC. I really would hate to have all these tC owners going around who are blessed with a comfy pocket rocket at 17k, complain because it's only a 5 speed.

My tc has 6 counting reverse. I rarely use 5th either since I'm just running back and forth to the liquor store. (A little levity never hurts.)

Why? Why? Just buy the damn car for what it is which is a pretty nice car for the price.

they should make it like 5th gear tops out at 150mph. so 1-5 are really short and great for racing and just dartin around town. and then have 6th gear go to around 225mph. it would make 6th gear perfect for long hauls cruisin on the highway.

I'm going to assume you're joking

For a little tech information for all the retards who are probably agreeing with this post, and taking it seriously. If a gear was that long on a car with 160 hp, we'd accelerate so slowly you'd never actually really reach the top speed. Shorter gears = faster acceleration. Fin.
