Default Increasing Windshield Wipers' Efficiency

Hey SL!

Just wanna ask how do you make the windshield wiper more quiet while it's inuse?

I replaced mine like 3 months ago and for some reason, today was one of the first few times I've used it and it's squeaking and leaving temporary streaks on the windshield when it was raining outside. I don't want to waste money on buying new ones again. These are the OEM wipers.

I've used them before and they used to be PERFECT, where you get clean, clear, crisp wipes, but now, it's sloppy.

So I'm wondering what can I do to make it more quiet and wipe better? Cuz I live in Portland and we all know that it rains 9 out of the 12 months here.

I'm planning to clean the windshield and the wipers and add some WD-40 to the wiper. I heard that helps. Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

dang, i was hoping this would be a thread about how to make them work at higher speeds.

i hate it when it is raining while i'm on the interestate, and at 85 mph, they start to skip accross the windshield and don't wipe as effectively.

i guess i'll have to research how mercedes benz makes their wipers work at autobahn speeds...

simple solution.. Bosch ICON. One piece wiper blades. That will solve your problem, no chattering at highway speeds either! No streaking.

Also clean your windshield with Bon-Ami, it's a safe for glass clenser. can find it at the grocery store. Toyota also recommends it in their service bulletins for cleaning the windshield. Please use with plenty of water too when cleaning with Bon-Ami!

I'll x3 on rain-x --- I apply 3 coats every 2-3 months. Most of the time I don't even use wipers on the highway because the rain just beads up the windshield and clears itself...

Really helps to wipe off the edge of the wiper rubber with a towel or cloth - dirt gets stuck to the cleaning edge that contacts the glass and that is why they streak. Definately use some Rain-X on the windshield for highway driving and don't use the wipers much or it will rub it off.

Or you can use them and put more on
I think it's better to be safe and use them rather than worry about rubbing the rain-x off.

Valeo wipers. That's what European cars use. Tirerack is throwing a sale on them. Buy one get one free. These are way better than the Bosch Icon.

no, i really do 90+ depending on traffic, but approximately 85 mph is when they start skipping accross the windshield because of all the wind.

When I have my car sitting in the driveway and have the wiper on the highest setting, it rocks the car back and forth. The motor they use is pretty damned fierce. It's a single wiper blade, though.

Default Windshield treatment

Aquapel is a better product than Rain-x. 1 treatment every 6 months and the wipers aren't needed above 55 mph.

I have tested against products and it works the best.

My two cents.

If you havent used them for a while (which i find hard to believe in Portland, unless this car isnt your DD), the rubber may just be dry. After they soak up a bit (and the dirt rinses off), they will work fine. Thats how its been on every car I have driven.

And I would also like to endorse Rain-X, I love the stuff. And they say on the box to "use your windshield wipers as normal." The stuff is relatively cheap, so I would rather have to re-apply then end up in an accident

Just use a stiffer spring to hold down the wiper arm.
