insurance
hey everybody im 17 and from new york and plan on getting a tc very soon. however the insurance quotes i received seem unbelievable and this is the only thing stopping me right now. under my own name, i was first quoted $7500 for the year with progressive. under my parents policy i was quoted $5500. one of the higher quotes i received was actually $12,000 ---i actually laughed out loud. i later went to state farm and was quoted about $4500 under my own name.
how much do u 17-18 yr olds from new york pay? what company? under your name or your parents? etc... any input is appreciated.

I have allstate and only pay $77 it's sorta under my parents name but not really beacuse they know it's me and actually told me i owe $77 by myself if my parents didnt pay. So mine is $77 per month. I am also 23 and have been with them for 5 years. So that might make a difference.
I'm 31 now, married and I pay $72 a month with USAA, but they're only for military. I think GEICO quoted me about $20 more than that. Your insurance goes down dramatically if you have a clean record as you pass 25 and 30. In Japan, I was paying $360 a year for car insurance.
Jeezus, I've never heard of insurance that high before... wow. Crazy. Hope you kind find an insurance quote that's not rediculous.
I'am 20, and i have New Jersey Teachers Insurance. They have me at 2600 a year.
It all comes out to 265 a month. Do you have any tickets? I know NJ Cure is pretty good for younger people but i dont know if they offer it where you are.

Wow sucks to be young,,, hehe. I just paid mine today I'm 27 and live in WI $391.00 for six months. I guess it is cool to be getting old and to live in WI, yeah! Good luck finding better rates, those seem to be crazy high.
Yea talk about crazy insurance!! I though I was paying too much at 224$ a mouth!! well your 7500$ a year or even worst 12 000$ a year beat me!!!
I am actually thniking of minimum auto insurance, would be 350$ for 1 year, but then I am scare cause here in the US (Compare to Quebec,Canada where I come from) you can be sue and call been resposible for all damage and injury cause in an accident! Plus my scion is nearly new and would not be repair or replace if something would happen!
I am paying too much for everything since I'm here!!! lol

My insurance is whack, I'm 27, no tickets, no accidents, I've been insured since 18, and I've only made 2 claims, both for windshields. 130 a month is the best I can find on my own, so I jumped on my mom's policy to save 10 bucks. This summer I will shop around again and I will just pay the annual premium at once to save some cash. I'm hoping for something under 1200 for the year, which is acceptable to me, considering I don't drive like a maniac, and I haven't even gone faster than 85mph in like 4 years.
Sometimes I think that unless you are a married white female, you can't get anywhere with car insurance companies. I do remember paying 330 monthly for insurance with a 285 car payment back when I was 18-19, and if I could go back in time I'd just save my money and take the bus, because paying ~600+ a month to drive a 15k car is just stupid, that's not factoring in gas or maintenance. 600 bucks a month is what you should be paying on a lexus, bmw, or a big suv, not a tiny little toyota. I'd also like to know why different companies vary so much on prices, one insurance is cheap for someone, while that same insurance is outgageously expensive for someone else with the same attributes as person A, it really seems like they just pull a number out of their butts and see if you're stupid enough to pay it.

167 a month Allstate, i am 21, got two ticket b4, took defensive driving on one, and the other is off my record since i paid like a fee about 50 bucks, only apply to that particular county though...i thought it was kinda cool
insurance is not based on voodoo math or a "number pulled out of their butts." it is a highly calculated industry where risk is the number 1 concern.
$12k a year is clearly insane. that's a quote from a company who doesn't want to insure a 17yo with a scion tC. maybe their rate would be competitive if it was a ford focus. their business model might be to favor domestic cars, or older buyers, or some other factor we don't know.
one big part of your insurance rate is going to be your annual mileage. it costs very little to insure a car which sits in a garage all the time. if you drive a lot, you pay more since being on the road is risky. if your school or work is 30 miles away, you pay more than your neighbor who only travels 5 miles.
each company makes their own decision about risk. some will say that a young driver is risky. some care most about annual mileage. others will not care about age, they will care about the vehicle. my dad once had a trans am (this was in the mid '80s). state farm wouldn't even give him a quote. they simply refused to insure trans ams.
shop around and present the best information you can to each company (like, don't overestimate the miles you will drive; underestimate). also, select the amount of deductible which makes the most sense for you. if it's going to save you $100 per month to have a $500 deductible vs. something lower, then it is insane to pay extra for the lower deductible. so take the maximum deductible (as in highest) that you can without feeling like you'll be hosed should you need your insurance.
oh yah, and i'm 34 and pay about $1100/year for full coverage on both my miata and tC combined (comprehensive, collision, uninsured motorist, 100/300 liability, blah blah... $100 deductible on comprehensive, $300 deductible on collision, 1 point on my record). wheni was younger, i was on my parents policy for as long as i could be (no benefit to breaking away on your own sooner than that) and i remember paying like $1,500/year for lower coverage on a much suckier car (used '84 mercury cougar v
