Insurance Spike Anyone?
So I get this months insurance bill and I notice a $80 increase. I call my agent and get this explanation:
"When the car first came out it was given an insurance code of 12 since it was new. That number was re-evaluated for the year and went to a 27, thus the increase".
So the "number" he is referring to he says is some number that a national agency (ntsb maybe?) assigns the car for all insurance agencies. It goes up because of safety ratings, number of accidents, cost to fix the car, etc.
He, as always, found a way to get my monthlies back down by jacking up deductibles and waving a few insurance magic wands.
I am curious if anybody else noticed a similar spike lately? Or am I just getting the shaft and need to do some shopping.

Mine went down actually. Until I lowered my deductibles and added some coverage - then it went up a little - but I caused that.
Doesn't sound right to me though... who does your insurance? Is it local?

It is American Family, sorta a fly by night, but they got me lower rates when I was with progressive and on risk.
Anybody know of this number he may describe though? Can't remember if he said it was evaluated every 6 months or a year, either way.

Went up $80 a month?? I only pay $88 right now for my tundra, and it will only be $96 a month when my Scion arrives. What kind of rates are these fly by night companies charging? (I have state farm, with all the bells and whistles)
American Family is crap insurance. A buddy of mine had them and he got raped! Especially when he made a claim after an accident they automatically boosted up his deductible from 500 to 900 stating the car had "depreciation". The car was only a year old! If you want cheap and good...try Western General or AAA if you add a person on with you
I work for a car insurance company (a real one, cant say the name, but think lizards
). We use a slightly different type of system to rate the vehicles. When the symbol (the thing we use) is created for a brand new model vehicle, it is usually based off of the MSRP. If the vehicle experiences more losses, or more expensive losses, than expected, the symbol gets re-evaluated. Bad news wolfie_tc, it's not gonna go down anytime soon. It is a legitimate reason to increase your premium.
So, with all that being said, $80 a month is ridiculous!!!! and ! Even $80 for a six-month premium is WAY too much. You, my friend, need to find a new insurance company yesterday (no, I'm not trying to get you to insure with my employer, but you really need to get a new company, any company!)
Hope the inside info helps!
