hey, uri geller (google him if you're too young to remember), you may be pulling the key toward you before it is out of the ignition....imo, force created the problem not soft metal or a defect....the key isn't pewter....but i'd love to see the face of the service writer when you try to warranty this one.
"hey can i get a new key under warranty? mine's melting."...jk

Bakersfield, California, eh, bubblemyster? That explains it...
"In Bakersfield, 'cold weather' is merely a conventional phrase and has come into use through the necessity of having some way to distinguish between weather which will melt a brass door-**** and weather which will only make it mushy."
Obviously it's been a warm summer...

Every time I've been through Bakersfield it has been downright HOT.
I honestly have no idea what the area's like because my main concern has been to get out of the furnace and back to something that an unprotected human might survive in.
Wait! Wait! I take that back! I passed through there one night in December of 1969 and it wasn't hot. My mistake. Sorry. :D
