Default keys?

bought my car at a used lot and only got one key with it. wish i had 2 cause if i lock my key in there im screwed. but anyways, i went to the hardware store to get a copy made and the dudes like nah theres a microchip in there that it has to have to make the key work and ill have to go to the dealer to get a copy made. so i guess im gonna have to get a copy made. can i get a copy without the remote buttons on it because i really just want a flat metal key that i can keep in my wallet incase i get locked out of my car. how much does toyota charge for duplicate keys?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought you needed the vallet key with the little metal tag on it that has a special number for your car. That's what they go by to make a new key, or so I think I read in the manual, but I would assume they would have the power to make a copy for you. not sure on the price though, sorry.

You can copy the metal key and use that to unlock the door, but it won't start the car. No idea how much Toyota charges for duplicate keys, but I am sure it will be a lot. Your alternative is to disable the engine immobilizer so that the microchip is no longer needed to start the car. I don't know how to do that, but there must be a way. Maybe someone else knows how to turn it off.

My experience:

I lost one of my key with the alarm button, here's how much the dealer charged:
Key with alarm buttons: $120
Key with NO alarm buttons (with chip): $90
"Programming" the key: $80
Cutting is free.

The dealership I bought the key from did the free cutting. Luckily I bought it from them and the guy who did the cutting didn't do it right so they had to give me another key. Apparently, if you buy a key from the dealer and they don't cut it, and the guy who did the cutting for you screwed up, you'll have to buy another one.

I bought the key with the alarm for $30 more. I spent $200 to replace a fricking key.

By the way with the vallet key, when you turn it from the "on" to "acc", the windows will not work so it has to be on the on.

I use a plain key with the chip in it. My dealer made it for free when I bought the car.

That's the best time to get "Free" things. They're itching to make a sale so they're more generous.

Well like I said, if anyone knows a way around the engine immobilizer then you can use a plain old freebie key. I am certain it can be done. I doubt a thief could disable it easily, but as the owner of the car with a legitimate key and lots of time on your hands, there is surely a way. However, I guess that makes your car easier to steal, so it's your call.

There is a work around for the immobilizer, but dont know why you would want to. You can take a key with the chip and hide it under the dash. Then use keys that are just straight cut.

It will work, but why?

I've read some of those and they don't work. I tried the one when you press pedals, turn the ignition... etc... didn't program the key.

I don't believe there is a way to program a key without going to the dealership because they use some tool called intelligent tester--
I do know that if you lose all of your keys, then replacement of the transponder ECU is required-

But if you have 1 key still then the dealer can use the remaining key, erase the key code of the lost key and register additional keys as necessary-- when the ignition key cylinder on the door key cylinder set is replaced, they remove the transmitter module from the original master key and install it into a new key- then they use this master key to register other keys if necessary--

but cost is going to vary depending on which dealer you go to
