Default Knight Rider light

A little help/advice please.

A friend of mine bought me a red light bar, much like the Trans Am had in the show "Knight Rider." It fits perfectly behind the grill and might be a cool mod to try. I want to put it in and check it out, but I'm not sure how to wire it. Right now it has a cigarette lighter plug as the power source. I imagine you could cut the plug off and wire it into the power supply of the car, but I don't know a lot about that stuff. I would like to wire it with a switch so I can turn it on and off from inside the car. Since there are some legal issues with driving with it on, it can't be a constantly running kind of thing. I know a little bit about wiring, but not enough to do this on my own.

Any help would be much appreciated- thanks!

I had one in my younger (and MUCH stupider days). It is a simple 12v hook up. cut the plug off and touch the two wires to the pos and neg terminals of the battery. If it lights up then you have the polarities right, if not switch them.

As for the switch wire one side of the switch to the neg wire of the light control box and the other to the chassis (find a screw). Then wire the 12v directly from a fuse that is only on when the car is on (or the battery if you can remember to turn it off and on everytime) or battery to the light control box.

All that being said, I wouldn't do it again. You can get major tickets and fines if you are caught and you will get laughed at. But if you like it, go for it. Just remember to turn it off when you get on the road.
