Default Leaking Battery.

as many of you already know i did/am still doing a wire tuck on my tC and re-located the battery to the trunk. I did not have anything to mount it down with and didnt feel like drilling any holes at the time cuz i wasnt sure where i wanted the battery to stay.

it been um-mounted for about 2 weeks and ive hit some pretty big bumps but it has never fallen over. i hit a big bump today and looked behind me to make sure that it didnt fall over, thats when i realized that there were quite a few pools of battery acid sitting in my trunk.

i went home and cleaned everything up real good and drilled some holes to mount the battery with the OEM tie down, drove around some more and it seems like a little more leaked out.

it seems like its coming from the top of the battery, i checked all 3 of the little plastic screw on the raised pieces on both sides, they are all tight.

any one else have this problem?
im gonna replace it next week anyways but i was just curious.

How did you have pools of acid in your trunk? Wouldn't it erode the metal?

Whats the odds of the puddles just being water, maybe a gasket or something on the hatch isn't on correctly?

Looking for the best-case option here, haha

i checked all the screws, they were all tight.

im positive it was acid, it smelled and i touched it and it burned, and you could actually hear it sizzling. haha.

it didnt really erode anything cuz i had 3 layers of e-dead back there so i soaked all the acid up with towels and ripped out all the e-dead.

Ohh ok. That sucks the edead is ruined.

Just get an optima battery, those can take more abuse. I haven't really read up much on them, but I know around here people put them in sand cars and off-road buggies cause they are more durable and take more abuse without leaking.

Grab the battery with some gloves and turn it up side down, then just see what it's leaking out from? But then again I think they are supposed to vent, so it'll probably leak everywhere.

idc about the e-dead, i have a ton left so ill prob just re-cover it.

and i was planning on getting a red-top in a week or two anyways, i was just curious if anyone else had this problem, i was gonna take it to the dealer but you and i both know that theyll just blame it on me putting it in the trunk.

and i did have gloves on while i was cleaning up all the acid so i took the battery completely out and tipped it and acid came pouring out of the area that i circled on the pic up there

if im not mistaken its leaking from the caps on the top of the battery where u would add distilled water to the battery acid. maybe it popped of from all the bumps u hit. did u try to snap the cap back on?

are the optimas a gel-cell or dry-cell battery cuz if not i suggest getting that kind of battery since they take more abuse and can be mounted in any position and as for your old battery it is most likely leaking from the battery cap vents and remember standard batteries are 64% water and 36% sulfuric acid so all that is swishing around and causing a leak.

I've heard of Tundras having a leaky battery problem, but not the tC. It could be you just got a bad battery. The battery in the Tundra would leak out of the top side of the battery, leaving a mess in the engine bay and the underside of the hood.

After reading a couple Tundra threads, it seems they are happy with Optima and it solved the problem.

Here's one for reference:

Hmm...

So one thing you could try is drive a different car and bring the battery to the dealership. Say it was leaking/spraying out of the top and you took it out of the car because you were worried it would do something bad.

This way, you don't have to pop your hood or show where your battery was mounted.

yea just do what he said up there and bring the battery into the dealership. just talk to one of the service advisors and if they ain't completely retarded they will see that its an oem tc battery and its oviously leaking.

im talking multiple puddles that managed to seep through 3 layers of e-dead mat and began eating away at my liquid e-dead.

i was just messsing with you, i'm bored.

in any case, get your optima, try not to drive for a while till you get it. battery acid is very bad for you and your car

and clothes!

Go to a different dealership if you can. I've got 4 within 45 minutes of my house. And as expensive as good batteries are, it's worth the trip to the dealer

if it's the original battery than it's covered under warranty as long as you are under the factory or extended warranty. i have had batteries warrantied before, but i don't know if it will be covered since its in the trunk
