Default lug nut broke off!

I was installing my Injen CAI today and when i went to take off the front wheel the first lug nut broke off with the threaded(don't know correct term) end inside the lug nut. It is broke past where the wheel is. It looks stupid with 4 lugs and i don't know if this is dangerous or not. So what im getting at is will scion replace this or do I have to pay to get it fixed?

simple fix go to a auto parts store and get and new stud and lug nut or tap the rest of the broke peice out.

beat the stud out and press in a new one.

Its not that dangerous but chances are they have been overtorqued to the point where they stressed the bolts. get scion to replace it. you can drive on it just dont turn hard or anything. If scion and scion only has worked on your wheels then make sure they note it for more lugs braking. Also make sure the rest are secure but not weak either.

but scion has never touch my wheels yet since i have had the car. I don't know about fixing it myself. I just don't have time to drop off the car this week. Will it be drivable for a week or so?

one broken stud isn't a huge problem. You can still drive with one broken stud, but you should try to fix the problem asap. most likely it broke off because it was overtorqued. a torque wrench would be a good investment. i personally keep one in my car at all times. a lug nut stud is a fairly easy to install(depends on the car though).

I hope you have a heavy hammer, a punch, and really good aim. Those things are a biatch to get out. Getting them in isnt too hard.

Just make sure to use pb blaster or wd-40.

That is, if scion doesnt fix it for you.

its either overtorqued or cross-threaded. the latter being more common for me. that what i get for going to hole in the wall tire shops. the just twist the lug on real quick and use an impact gun sometimes causing cross-threading. so when u go to remove the lug it snaps in half.

^^ yea def. its not funny though when all 5 lugs studs break off. if you used a impact wrench on the whole wheel might wanna replace all of em to be safe. they are relatively cheap.

that isn't a good idea to use an impact wrench to put the lugs back on(even with torque sticks, i prefer to use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts) its ok to use the impact wrench to take off the lugs, but imo do not use it when reinstalling the lug nuts.

Thanks for the great advice. But he put all 4 wheels back on with an impact. So this might competely suck for me. But Toyota said they would put in a new one for free. I just hope the rest don't break.

when i worked at a dealership's parts department, we used impact wrenches but were instructed not to tighten them too much with it because we were tofinish with torque wrenches. granted, what were were instructed was different than what we did. but...yea thats what they told us.
