Default Mods for best MPG, xB

Hi all,

I just got WP auto xB yesterday! I love it :D. But like many people here, I want to know how good mileage can be with mods. Other than driving economically and good mainteinance, can anyone suggest mods that improve mileage of our xB :?:

for example:

Mods:
-CAI or SR
-Exhaust
-Header
-Lightweight pulley
-Lower spring / shocks/struts (eg. less drag )
-Turbo kit and etc...
-Hyper Voltage

Additive
-Gas treatment ( It gains about 1-2 MPG on my corolla 98 )

The first mod I put ong the xB is the ground wires, it does help lowering the idling and throttle respond. Will see about the mileage. so far I can go 84 miles on a quarter of the tank (75% highway).

I will do more experiment by adding one mod at a time to my car and post the update on the mileage ---- I am a scientist, like to do experiment

I know that these mods are for performance, but want to put them on to gain HP/Torque as much as save gas for daily drive also.

Thanks in advance!

An intake of any kind probably wont do much to improve or hinder your mpg, but the Exhaust will most likely lower it. Thats what i experienced with my last car, when the exhaust went on, the mileage went down. Also, the turbo kit wont improve the mpg either.

not what i heard, if you go with a larger exhust diameter you should gain some mpg maybe if we all go with 3" exhust pipe diameter lol, i think thats over kill oh wait i'm thinking of a V-8 lol

Tru things like turbo and exhaust will lower your MPG but I have found that naturally aspirating your ride like with a really good cold air intake will give you a few extra miles out of your gas tank. The reason for this is because haveing a bigger better air induction system will keep your engine temp cooler making it work less. Maximizing your few consumption. Not to mention also your HP is increased anywhere from 5-15 HP depending on the brand and filter set-up. Headers won't do anything to improve your MPG but they will also up your HP.

yeah intake and exhaust help the most. a header helps a lil and the hyper ground may help by like .5 mpg

here goes my standard rant...

#1... gas is gas, I don't care what octane it is, it will not change your mileage... PERIOD... octane is a measure of stability not power...
#2... there are very few things that you can bolt onto an engine to raise mileage... a cold air intake/air filter will absolutely 100% never EVER change your mileage... your engine needs to make a certain amount of power to cruise down the road, if you make more power the car will accelerate, so you use a butterfly valve (called a throttle body) to limit the volumetric efficiency of the engine to lower the output of the engine... so if you increase in one area you will just have to decrease it in another area... keep in mind that there is no such thing as a "gas pedal" in a car, it is an "air pedal" or throttle... I might agree that a grounding kit might help, but better spark plugs/wires/coil/distributor will help make sure that all fuel is burned properly on every fire - but the grounding kit will not make the same amount of difference on every car, it will only make all cars even - it will only make up for a lack of grounding...

people claim all the time to get better mileage out of higher octane fuel, but I firmly believe that this is a psychological thing... the fact that you paid more for it makes you want to believe that you are making better mileage, but it definitely makes you "tread lightly" on the pedal - due to guilt... but no matter what you will never find a cost benefit to running higher octane fuel in a standard low compression engine like the xB... I would place the crossover point somewhere in the 100hp per liter range... we make about 72... 85/87 octane is all that it can use...

ok, so here's how you CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE...

#1... roll up your windows...
#2... turn off the a/c...
#3... slow down 5mph...
#4... accelerate slowly...
#5... minimize extra cargo... (weight savings)
#6... aerodynamics... remove rear spoiler, small rearview mirrors, etc... not ground effects...
#7... properly inflated tires... actually higher is better, but the trade off is traction...

What are ground wires. Im new and learning.
What is a hyper voltage.
and do they make light weight pulleys for the xb?

CAI will help if you're doing a lot of highway driving. Only mod I have on my dodge ram is a CAI and it did improve 2 mpg when traveling on hwy. Otherwise intake won't help much for stop and go at least in my expierences it doesn't.

Lightweight pulleys, look through the parts section. I found some in there that I'm saving up to buy. Also, and I'm sure you saw the infomercials on this, but the TORNADO supposedly ups your MPG a few miles, and adds a few horses too. You'd have to search for it, but it's less than $75 I think.

The TORNADO is something you place inside you air intake that spins the fuel, maximizing you air:fuel ratio. I'm picking one up in a few weeks.

I'm not sure if the Tornado works. I have heard from many people that it blocks air rather than improving air flow.

I drive on highway most of the time, so I'm going install the CAI anyway. Will post some number after I finish the experiment.

Light weight pulley is also in my wish list. Will install it next month.

thanks brock, couldn't remember where you said to go for the Tornado. I missed the sale right after KK, they were down to $50.

You are right I might give it a try.

http://www.courier-journal.com/busin...as26-8019.html

An article of abc7
http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/news/7on...3fuelsave.html

From the articles, the tornado works as well as a good tune up, I guess.

the Tornado is absolute junk... your intake is already 100% turbulent, the velocity of the air flow forces this to happen... adding vanes will absolutely not increase MPG...

and it doesn't spin the fuel, the fuel is added a foot or two downstream of where this thing is mounted... it is junk, save your money...

if Toyota could spend $5 to increase your mileage by 2mpg believe me it would be installed on every single car they make... think this through before you blow your dough...

so your saying that he is using 20gallons vs 45gallons?? so let's just say that he was getting 25mpg... then he added the device and he is now getting 56mpg??

this doesn't even make sense... please please please think for yourselves... these devices are just gimmicks to make one guy rich...

mgithens, thanks for the head ups.

I will try it out anyway. If it doesn't work, I can just return it to the store. I'll let you guys know the result sometime next week, so there will be no more curiosity.
