Default More rattleing....

I fixed the rattle in my "hatch the other day and posted the fix here..... a new rattle has started... not quite the same as the plastic "ribs".

This time it is in the metal on the roof where the rear dome light clips on. I unclipped the dome light an pulled the metal down a little bit. I found out that';s what it was because I was able to reach back and hold/pull on the metal whil i was driving ( I have long arms). I didnt bend the metal a lot, just enough to hopefully stop the rattle.

I didnt hear anyhting after I did this.... I'll keep everyone posted.

Did I mention I hate rattles???

When you put your hand to pull the metal, was the metal directly above the dome light, in front of the dome light, or behind the dome light?

Thanks.

Take off the dome light and there is a hole. I reached my fingers in the hole and pulled on the edges.

Hope that clears it up.

ps...be careful, I'm not sure if it will be sharp.

dachmo,

pm you but wanted to include in this thread:

I just figured out that my rattle is in the same place. as you indicated in your "rattle" post. Above the dome light and like you, if I pull down on the metal piece it STOPS. I had someone drive while I rode in the back. I always thought it was in the rear hatch/latch area but it is directly over the dome light. What I did this weekend is cut a piece of wood and jammed in the that area. Only tested for a few miles and no rattles. But this rattle is sneaky so I am assuming it will start again in a day or two.

Have you found a permanent fix??

Thanks.

I drove about 10 minutes yesterday and five minutes today and NO rattle. But this rattle will probably come back based on my last five fixes. I was just glad to figure out exactly where it was coming as I thought for sure it was from the back of the hatch/hatch latch..... But it would be nice to know why holding down that metal piece gets rid of the rattle. I tried at least 5-6 times last week and each time when I pulled down, the rattle went away and when I let go, the rattle was back....

Will post after my drive to work tomorrow morning.

Sorry no pics. Also hope that dachmo can say if/how he fixed the rattle above dome light. I basically cut a piece of wood that could be pushed into the dome light rectangle and then I forced the metal piece down while pushing the wood into place. I at least got a tight fit though I had to drill part of the wood as part of wood was covering one of the holes where the dome light connect.

Drove to work today with NO rattle. But I want to give this thing a week before thinking this is a fix. For ones having the dome light rattle, do you find this rattle comes and goes. Mine does but it always comes back. That is the frustrating thing is that the rattle comes and goes on its own. Not sure if it helps/hurts on how hard the hatch is connected though the dome light is in a NON-moving area. But I hope the wood block forces the metal piece to NOT move and thus no rattle.

I have noticed mine is affected by temp for the most part . Early morning as the temp is low outside the rattle is more muffled , but as noon comes and the sun rises (along with the temp) the rattle increases considerably . It was also affected by rain as well but I am suspecting that maybe the rain and water was cooling the metal and muffling the rattle (I suspect expansion and contraction of the metal to be the cause of it) . It is presently in the shop now getting looked at (By a different dealership) along the list of complains of the roof rattle is , the parking brake handle having to be pulled up almost completely for the brake to be set , as well as window rattle when shutting the door with the glass down (No the other door does not produce the same noises the passenger side does) . I will know more when they finish lookin at it , I just have a sneaking feeling they will have it for a while or they gonna slap it back togather again and shove it back out the door like the previous trips I have had at other dealerships . Only time will tell on this one , but on a brighter note . Found me a possible pick up truck on the used lot while I was there soooooooooooooo I DARE THE RATTLE TO RETURN LOL

Good luck with the fixes. I forgot if you had mentioned but did you drive with someone from dealership so they could hear your rattles? If my "fix" does not work, I am going to ask that someone ride in the back seat, pull down on the metal to show that the rattle goes away. How they can fix it is another story......

I once owned a Subaru SVX, one of the first year's production. It was a solid car but had tiny squeaks and rattles typical of first year production.

Fix: the interior trim was charcoal gray. tucking and jamming snippets of felt material into the suspect areas stopped all the noises.

A dab of fabric glue kept the felts from working loose. These were invisible fixes and the car never squeaked again.

If your tc rattle is in a not-visible area, then wad up any sort of soft fabric and put it where it will damp the vibrating offender.

The cause of my door rattle when you shut it with the window down .....................Sunshade . . The cause of the Titannic sinking on its maden voyage...........sunshade. . Ok new pickup truck here I come . Cuz I will need one to carry this load of BULL ISHT away . My faith in Toyota is now sitting next to the Titannic .

Alright tried doing the piece of wood in the roof to provide downward pressure on the metal piece that was mentioned earlier . Yes pulling on that metal piece cancels out the rattling noise , as I suspected it was something structural . The prob I ran into with this fix was , there is so much flex in this area no matter how I positioned it or shaped it , it would still vibrate itself loose . I'm thinking something like a thick piece of rubber or something (cut from a tire) or something along those lines would work better . Something that could flex with the frame but still maintain the pressure needed to cancel out the noise . Been brainstorming and will continue to think of ideas of a possible replacement to the wood block approach . As much as it bothers me to fix a car in this manner , anything that will get me through till I can get rid of it .

I'm not sure this is my rattle but do you also have a clunking sound of the hatch moving around kinda like when the door is not closed right?

Let me know what you use. I have not heard back from DACHMO who initiated this rattle being from the dome light. So far (knock on wood), the wood block is canceling out the rattle. But I want to wait at least a week before saying "IT'S FIXED". I tried 3-4 pieces of wood before I got one that I could really force in there. It is strange that you can hold onto the metal piece and the rattle goes away. I am just relieved that I at least found the rattle and it was not the trunk area.

Also strange for me that this rattle would come and go (mostly it would rattle but some days; maybe due to hot/cold, the rattle was NOT present).

If you are having the dome light rattle, I agree with others that it appears to be a structual problem versus a loose screw, nut, rib, etc.

Yeah I think I was the one that stated it as being a structual issue .I firmly beleive its affected by heat . Early morning and at night the rattle is there but not as bad as it is during mid afternoon and the sun is out . When its noon and hot out youd swear there was a woodpecker perched on my sunroof beating his brains out . Sad part is I am not to far behind him in wanting to do the same damn thing . As well as my dash has now decided to go nuts (mentioned in other post) . The sounds coming from teh dash reminds me of an old wooden sailing ship , Creeeeeeeeek moaaaaaaannnn Crreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek . Im waiting for something to fall off
