It all depends on the number of other drivers similar to you who have similar cars and wreck them. A big factor in what you pay is the loss history of the make and model. When a new car comes out, they often use numbers from a similar existing car as a basis for calculating premium. Once the new model has been out for a while and the losses start rolling in, the rates are adjusted.
So if suddenly there is a large group of tC drivers that total their cars, you'd better believe that everyone else who drives one is going to see their rates go up... that's just how insurance works.

i have SAFECO and i got my bill in the mail about two days ago. it said how some things changed for the tCs like thefts and cost to repair... but it went down i think $9 and this will be my first 6 month renewal. i have renters insurance through them also and i'm paying $1163.90 every 6 months for just the tC (miminal coverage (I know, I know! I can't afford more). i also have a total loss on my record, so i can't find any better rates really.

it's kind of weird though. i lived in maryvale, az (hot spot for crime) and was paying around $1600 just for insurance alone with them. moved to avondale, az and my rate dropped a little below $1200.

I didn't realize that location was THAT big of a factor! crazy!

Yeah location plays a big role. My brother used to live here with me in South Sacramento (the area I am in pretty bad) and he moved to a nice spot in Sacramento and his insurance dropped $500.

The way they do rates is crazy, but at the same time they need to make sure they don't go bankrupt paying out claims.

most of the time, the threat of going somewhere else is enough to get them to either go cheaper than before or just keep it the same.

I just got my premium notice (6 month) and mine went up a LOT because of the symbol increase (in my case it was more than one number, like 13 to 32 or something).

Needless to say, I'm shopping around!

IMO, as the car gets older and not worth as much, your rates should go DOWN (unless you've had tickets/claims) since their risk is going down.
