I think I'd pass on it. I kind of like our keys - having the keyless entry/alarm already on it. Would be nice if it wasn't such weapon, but it's still convenient.
I wonder if the transponder bypass would affect your insurance? Most places should give a discount for it, but if you have it bypassed, I wonder if they'd care... Obviously the alarm helpds, but I have an alarm and the transponder - just by component comparison.

That probably depends on the airport you're going to. Some are probably more retarded than others. Of course if someone doesn't recognize it as just a key, they're probably an idiot anyways.
BUT, that being said, I can see how they should at least be cautious and just check it to verify it's only a key. Someone could probably easily have something like that and modify it. So the thought should be there, but if it's just a key, there's no reason to take it away.

So did you get the key from toyota? How much did it cost? What is this transponder bypass thing? Is it to bypass the chip in the key (I assume there is one these days)? Does the xB have a chip in the key or would I be able to get the flip out key pretty easily?
The transponder bypass is so I can remote start my car. I'm 99% sure that xB's don't have a transponder chip. It should be pretty easy for you.

I bought it off this guy, got the key in a week.

DId you have to specify what car you drove to the guy?
Also i need that viper alarm system to make this work right?
And who did your bypass remote start thingy? IF thats what your talking about, wait is your tc an auto?

I told him I drove a tC and he told me scions have the standard Toyota blade. You might not even need the alarm system, you might be able to get away with just the bypass module, not sure though. Although, I think that's a waste because you would be going through all that trouble for a key. A former SL member installed my remote starter on my MANUAL tc. Having an auto or manual doesn't matter when you are talking about the transponder bypass, you need it either way....
Oh yeah, when I told him I drove a tC, he knew that they have a transponder chip. So if you are unsure, just ask him.

What the Transponder bypass does (or usually does) is take a key, program it to the car. And then mount it in a way that the car can read it and only it. This way if you remotley start your car, the car thinks that there is a valid key in the ignition and won't start your car. And when you use another key it won't read both keys and error.
The bypass effectively takes the immobilizer on the car out of the picture, so yes your insurance would not benifit from the immobilizer discount.
The 'transponder chip' is an actuall chip on the key that gets powered by the car when you put it in. (yep, the car actually powers this chip, not the battery) It stores a unique ID code, and then when its powered it sends out that data to a reciever mounted over the ignition housing. This reciever checks the key's ID to what it has stored in memory and determines if the key belongs to the car. If it does not, it will kill the engine.
In a nutshell, if you give our car a transponder bypass, people can steal it. If you don't, they can't.
You DO NOT need any sort of security for a bypass, nor will you need a specific transmission. However no shop will install a remote start on a manual.
Dam...I sound like I am back at work.
ugh....

When you use a bypass module (556u, for example, made by DEI) You lose your valet key and put it in a box. What you should ask of your installer is to cut the key with tinsnips, so that they key can't be taken out of the box when the alarm is going off, and start the car after disabiing the alarm.
