My tC is rusting already!
Well, maybe not too bad, but it is, kind of. I had the dealer install the rear-lip spoiler on my car about a week after I got it. So, the spoiler has been on for about a month now. Looks like the technician who put it on, didn't properly clean the car of the metal shavings from drilling the holes in the hatch. Today, I walk around back to open the hatch to throw in my laundry basket when I notice a bunch of rust coloreed pot-marks on the hatch, spoiler, and running down the bumper. After opening the hatch I see even more inside around the edges and running under the plastic pieces holding the rear lights in. I was ____ED! I took it to a car wash (touchless) and hoped it would all come off, but no luck. I took an old rag and tried to wash it off on one spot to see if I could get it off, but no luck. So, I took it into the dealer today and showed them. I go in on Monday to get it worked on and hopefully fixed. If it is not PERFECT when I get it, I want a new one! Any advice?

They don't have to give you a new car but they will have to fix the problem. Lemon laws differ from state to state but in California I believe the dealership has 3 attempts to fix the problem. If after the 3rd try it's still jacked THEN you can call the car a lemon and get a new one.
Regardless, I'm sure they'll be able to fix it to your satisfaction, even if they have to re-paint.
yes the paint job on the tC is BAD
my friends tc has alot more paint chips then mines. i only have 2 but he has several!
this is upsetting.......
but i havent experienced RUST, yet.
everyone should be warned, one thing bad about the tC is paint job they've done...

if they screwed up the spoiler.. report it to scion (take pics for proof).. most likely you should get a new liftgate/hatchback!! forget trying to "send it to a body shop".. that's stupid.. get a new part!
Ok, I don't have a digital camera, but I have a camera phone. I will hopefully get somepuces when I am not so busy. I did take it to the dealer on monday and they id a decent job of getting it off. BUT, they only cleaned the areas visible to the naked eye. I informed the manager of this and they said, "next time whne you have time, come down and we'll fix it for you." My thinking is that it should have been properly done in the first place, and then properly cleaned when I brought it back...ANy, I am a bit of a busy person so I have to wait till I can afford dropping off the car for a day again. Good news, the area that was cleaned looks like mint condition, so I'm not too worried about it getting any worse over the next week or two.

We had the same thing happen. But the cust. took it to car toys and installed a back-up camera and they left metal shavings in the hatch back gutter. Then got mad at us, so we cleaned it up for free. It rusted and stained the wax. It took our detail department a good 2 hours to get all the spots out and rewax the car.
Ok, so finally, after going to the dealer twice to get the metal shavings cleaned off and the spots buffed out, there are still many spots left over. Today, I went one last time to the dealer, and this time got results. They took it in to get it repainted. They are calling it a "paint defect" in order to do it under warranty, which to me says that they just want Toyota to foot the bill and not their dealership for screwing up. I say, whatever gets the job done. They gave me an 05 Corrolla to drive around for a few days while the tC get's some beauty rest. If it is not perfect and all the spots completey gone, God help those service men when I get my hands on them...
I would guess it is what is known as "Rail Rust" which is removed with the clay bar when detailing the car before delivery. It is very noticable on white cars and as long as you remove it before delivery it would not damage the paint. But you said it was on the spoiler too so that does not support my theory.
The spoiler installation instructions I read, (for the xB, but same issue) said to PAINT the edges of the exposed metal with a rustproofing paint after you've drilled the holes. If they left the edges bare, then just cleaning off the rust from the shavings may not completely fix the problem. I would ask them if they drilled holes and if they treated the exposed edges .
