Default Need help/Advice with front brakes

So i need a little help from you guys.

My girl friend has asked me to post this, she drives a 2006 TC.

She went away with me for the holidays and her tc need front brakes and an oil change. So her mom decided to take it on her to get these things done at the dealership.

Her mother is stating that the bill came to $295. The oil changes are $34 and change everytime out the door. That leaves 261 dollars to have the front brakes changed. Last time i went in with her they said that the rotors were fine and all that needed to be replaced were the pads.

Does this sound right? $261 for a front brake job.

If its sounds correct she has no problem paying her mom, but i'm just calling shanagens.

Thanks guys

A buddy of mine had his brakes done at a scion dealership where he bought the car. Only front brake pads replaced and rotors resurfaced.....$305 was his total....so your girl got a deal....if you wanna call it that. I was quoted about $285 out the door by my dealer for the same job as my buddy (we bought our tC's at 2 different dealers locally)....so it sounds about right for a dealer. Mind you I ended up doing my own brakes......since a BBK may be going on this summer.

^ yup. easy stuff. Did my brake pads all around in my friends driveway..took a couple hours but that includes setting the car up, taking off the wheels, etc. I had to use the jack for the spare tire which wasn't a lot of fun haha needless to say my arms were pretty sore afterwards...

brake jobs aren't cheap but are easy to do. If you need to do rotors also, all you have to do is take em down to an autoparts store and they usually can do it for you, not sure of the cost but in the end learning to do it yourself will save you a lot of money.

I have done them before on a friends truck. What ____ed me and her off is that she took her car without her permission and got the brakes done and then gave her the bill to pay for it. I could see if she was doing it as a nice gesture but she hands her the bill when she didn't even want it done by her in the first place.

end of rant.

ohhh I misread that. Well aside from the price being half decent (that cost doesn't surprise me for that work) but thats f'ed if her mom took the car and handed her the bill. Even if one of my parents did that to me I would tell them to basically f*** off that they're paying for it because I never asked them to do it.

Wow i didnt know that. Geez. I would not give her mom a cent. That is BS. Crap if the brakes were bad i wouldve been like dont drive i will take care of it. If anyone in my family took it upon thereself to do it and expects you to pay when it wasnt there car to do it with I would been like heres your payment 1 finger salute. Shouldnt have touched my car. Enjoy losing that money.

I do all my friend's front brakes in under 45 minutes. I LOVE having access to a brake lathe, air tools and an auto rack to put the car in the air!...
I charge each one of them a low, low price of $50. They have to pay for the parts though.

$261?!?!? Jeez. I'm REALLY glad my family owns it's own parts shop. I did the front pads and rotors for like $85 with some really good ceramic pads.

Seriously, for that amount of money that a dealer charges for a brake job you could get all four brand new rotors, not even re-using the old ones, AND pads and it'll come out cheaper to do it yourself.

I got the slotted stoptech rotors and hawk pads for like $400 or something. OE-like replacements are substantially cheaper

Installing yourself is nice, because you are basically trusting your life with someone when you let them touch your brakes.

Tell your girls mom your gf was planning on taking it to JustBrakes for $100 total, and that all shes putting up is $100. Then thank her for paying the rest.
