There are more posts about this than almost anything on the board. The long and short of it is that anything you buy that isn't projector based (like all of the retrofits) are illegal crap. someone on here is selling them though, so look around. Pay about $350. Blind everyone on the road. The blub sizes are in about 15 different threads and in your manual. Can we lock this now?

Are there any cheap kits anyone's used that have turned out good? I plan on getting the projector headlights, so a kit with out the halogen high beam built in is not a factor for me. anyone want to give advise on this rather than leave condesending remarks?

Dude, wtf?

HIDs with multi-reflectors=useless

Why do you think all of the cars that come with factory HIDs have projectors?

HIDs are really scattered in the distribution of the light in the first place, and then you're going to put them with multi-reflectors? That scatters it even more, and makes you an easy noticable target for cops.

If you're going to have HIDs, go for the retro kit to turn your multi-reflectors into projectors, THEN put the HIDs in.

Um... I'm not a big fan of flaming people, but you've got to be crazy. That "Shining" that you're referring to is the light that should be focused down on the road blinding everyone and going the wrong direction. HID in housings not designed for HID is ineffective, unsafe, and illegal. Go for it. I hope you get popped by the fuzz.

False. Many cars are available with factory-installed HID in appropriate reflector housings. Among them: Subaru WRX, Mini Cooper, Infiniti G35 Coupe and Sedan, Toyota Sienna and Toyota Prius.

Very true. But the Scion tC isn't one of them and it's disengenuous to imply that all reflectors are the same. The ones designed for HID are designed for HID. The ones designed for halogen like ours are going to throw HID all over the place. Like I said, you'll hopefully get popped by the cops before you blind someone who crashes into you.

Are you saying I implied that? If you are, I'll request that you reread my post. Note that I said "factory-installed HID in appropriate reflector housings." Appropriate meaning a housing designed to control an HID light source. I didn't even mention the tC or insinuate that all reflectors are the same.

My point was to highlight the fallacy that factory HID is only available with projector-type headlight setups; nothing more.

Infinity is stupid for having the G-35 as reflectors. while the Nissan 350Z has projectors. You'd think it'd be the other way around. Higher end cars happen to be more projector based.

I was semi-implying that the higher end cars have projectors, but I definately didn't make that clear.

The 350Z looks like it has a combination of both, see http://www.importhookup.com/HID/350Z/350z_8.jpg . From what I've read they don't work all that great. I think the whole projector vs. reflector thing has been thoroughly beaten to death, but what you said is generally correct.

Looks like I misunderstood what you were saying - we both seem to be on the same track here though. As for the 350Z using both projector and reflector... I like the looks of projectors. I wouldn't want to use both simultaniously - I'd like to have a headlight setup with multiple projectors though. That would look pretty good.

It was just changed for the 2005 model year. Before, they were reflector type.

Default xB HID 8000K

ok. im gooing to lay it out, i have HID lights on my 05 xB. i have the 8000K h4 base with a built in flash to pass bulb so youdont totally loose use of high beams, ok i've read posts saying it melts housings. the focus is all wrong. all kinds of stuff, the focus is exactly the same as original h4's i marked and measured. exactly the same. next point melting housings.. i've had them for about a month and i looked and inspected the housings after a month. no melting nothing, i spent $305 delivered from www.hid-lights.com i bought the X5 series, direct plug & play. no messy relays, wirires. extra fuses anyting, plug and play just make sure the ballasts are insulated from the body. and the X5 series combines the ballast and starter in one unit. so no headaches with lots of wires, i think this is definatly worth the money, light output is awesome and no annoying glare. i have yet to be 'flashed down' by other drivers.

hid's don't melt housings... let me say that again, HIDS DON'T MELT HOUSINGS.
anyone with some common sense would know this. hids burn cooler than halogens, which is why they only use 35w instead of 55w that halogens use, they're more efficient cause they don't lose energy to heat. in fact, there are some people on a TL forum complaining that they hid's don't melt the snow off their headlights like their old cars used to.
