Default New tC owner - Check your tire pressures

It felt very bumpy with my new tC especially driving on construction road. I checked the tire pressures and it turned out that they were way off. It's reccommended to have 32/29 for front/rear tires. However, i had 34/36 on my new tC! This problem might be dealership specific though...

I think thats a pretty common problem. I make sure to check the pressure before all of my deliveries because they ride like garbage with to much!

This might be stupid, but were the tires check cold? Or after they have been warmed up? This affects the pressure. I'm not exactly sure if they numbers on the manual are cold or warm, but I believe that on my camry, the numbers written down were for when they were cold. Someone correct me of I am wrong.

Also to add to the last reply, if it is the middle of summer 95 degrees F vs. the middle of winter here, 15 degrees F that will change temp enough to change the pressure, so if the temp shifts drastically from one month to another re-adjust your pressure....

You are correct. The numbers posted on the door jam/manuals are for "cold" tires.

The tires are inflated like that for the truck ride to the dealership. I guess it helps them from bouncing around. During the PDI they are supposed to change the tire pressure. Im pretty sure they do it will all Toyota/Scions.

You're right! My salesman claimed that my tC was right off the truck. They only had 2 hours to clean and wax the car. The odometer showed 1 mile when i got it and i had to press the reset button to clear the warning light.

This is a good post. When I checked (cold of course) mine, they were all around 38-40 PSI. WOW........

Everyone needs to check their PSI though the dealer is supposed to do during PDI.

Tire pressure are one of the key components to car safety.
They are where the rubber meets the road (no phun intended), all of your vehicle's actions are transmitted through 4 patchs each roughly the size of a book.

Thats alot riding on not alot of area, just keep that in mind.

Straight from a Michelin Engineer's mouth " better to be 5 over than 3 under" psi that is.

*BUMP*
Checked mine...sure enough 36 all around...I looked at the wear on my tires after 600 miles. The little nubs showed they started to cup.
What a ride difference. Little slower though.

Zoohay & others,
I'm really glad someone mentioned this... I checked my tire pressure today and it was 34 on all but the front driver side tire which was 30. The tires were cold. That's way off of what they should be! I had been driving around for over 700 miles with the pressure wrong but I'm glad it is fixed before it screwed up my tires (I hope). -Jayme

Ya'll got it easy. I was rolling on 40PSI all around on my xB for 500miles.

BTW, with my previous experiance with the Potenza RE92's and RE950's, these tires significantly lose air every month compared to other tires. Especially when it is freezing cold (Northeast cold, not SoCal cold) tire pressure will be low. Check it very month.

Yep, I had the same on my tC. Went out and got a good $10 guage and will check every month.

My front right tire blew up on my tC =/ I didn't check the tire pressure (not sure if it had anything to do with it), but I drove over some small debris on the freeway, and the tire now no longer even resembles a tire, but is a pile of rubber. I now have to use the goofy spare tire, and now can only drive the tC only when absolutely necessary I wonder if tire pressure had anything to do with it, because it really was a rather small bump, considering the annihilation of my tire.

i was thinkin about the tire pressure monitoring system in the tC and it seems like the warning light would only come on if the tires were uneven. the computer calculates the speed of each wheel and if they arent around the same speed, the warning comes up....
If the tires all drain at the same rate, the light probably wont come on.

am i wrong?

that's right, so if it was messed up right now, it probably won't recognize it because the tire preset button was probably already hit. so you should check the tires, and if they're off, fix it, then hit the tire preset button, otherwise it will notice the pressure in the tires have changed, and the warning light will come on.

You are correct. However, the chance for all the tires or even two to lose pressure at the same time, is quite remote. Recommend to definitely get a good guage (no more than $12) and check your pressure once a month.
