Default njzauthentik: turbo verses supercharger tutorial

As far as I know, they are only making a supercharger for the tC .

The difference between a turbo and a supercharger is basically its power source. A turbo is powered by exhaust gasses while a supercharger is belt driven from the crank shaft or accessory belt. Advantages\dissadvatages:

Turbo Pros
usually a little more boost
uses wasted exhaust engergy

Turbo Cons
difficult to install and more complex
prone to wear and tear due to extremely high turbine rpm

Supercharger Pros
Easy to install, less complex
Does not create excessive back pressure in the exhaust system

Supercharger Cons
Usually less boost than turbo
Usually noisier than turbo (although most think it sounds cool)

None of this is to say that one is better than the other, these are just the basics of both. Both are good systems in their own ways. I personally like the simplicity of the supercharger. Also, on some older fords (merkur to be exact) as well as some other turbo driven engines had a serious problem. Turbos turn extremely high rpms, and some of the older ones had ceramic oil seals. When these wore out, there was a "leak" between turbo and the oil system. The venturi effect caused by this sucked the oil out of the oil system very rapidly, many times destroying the engine before you could get it shut down, since the engine is at high rpms when the turbo is engaged.

Ok..... I know, too much info.... just some things to clarify the two systems :-)

Post resurrected 4 years after the fact from the bowels of the thread graveyard.

I'm gettin the supercharger for 2 main reasons...

I have an automatic...so the Supercharger would offer a better overall performance as compared to a turbo...
&
I stay under warranty...

I'm more about style than speed, though I do like speed...I will do very few (but big) engine mods...

Actually, turbocharged automatics never fall out of boost. Either way (manual or auto) on a supercharger your going to have to re-gain boost as RPMs rise (on centrifugal setups)

Hmmm.... it's a tough one. I think a supercharger is the way to go. Keeps the car under warranty, makes for an easier install, and less maintenance.

One question: Can i keep my injen CAI with a supercharger or do I have to loose it?

You can keep your CAI, but your going to have to get a piggyback ecu and tune.

Is it worth it to keep the CAI and get the piggyback ecu when adding a supercharger? I think the cai delivers maybe 4hp, but I like the way it sounds.

you're going to need a custom CAI then.. cuz the pipe routing is different. Or you can just get the WeaponR SC Intake but it's a shortram.

I dunno maybe I'll just sell the CAI and get a K&N drop-in. One more question thou: can I install the supercharger myself with just hand tools or does the engine have to be tuned afterwards?

Thanks for the helpfull answers. They are appreciated.

you can install it yourself if you've got the skills.. but you will need to go to the dealer and get the ecu reflashed.
