Default Replacing Third-brake light with LED?

Back in June of 04 this was a hot topic on this board. The big question was "Does it light up all the way? WHY NOT???". People were pretty dissapointed. Well, now we know it doesn't. The 3rd brake light just lights up in the middle, and there are reflectors on either side. Although this looks cool at nite (as the lights fades to either side), Im still surprised nobody has marketed some sort of replacement. Any thoughts on how you might put some LEDs in there? Plus has anyone heard about the Dealer LED Taillights coming out?

I'm working on it. I took the assembly out the other day. It should be a pretty simple mod. I ordered my LED's today. It will take 7-14 days to get them in (closer to 7).
All you have to do is solder enough LED's onto a piece of bread board with the right resistor, drill holes in the bottom inside edge of the assembly, and connect two wires to the power source. I'll post a How-To with pics when I'm done.

Hey all, but especially Komik

For the 3rd brake light, how did you get into the actual light housing? Are you just going to drill holes in the gray backing of the 3rd light housing? I was trying to separate the clear plastic front piece, the one you see from the outside from the grey plastic backing onthe inside. It's held together by loctite or something. I couldn't get the damn thing apart to get inside the brake light housing.

Are you going to drill out big chunks of the grey back piece or just a few holes to stick the Leds through?

I haven't gotten into the actual housing yet. Once my LED's come in I'm going to pull the assembly out again and take a closer look. At first glance I thought it looked like the two pieces (outer clear and inner gray) were melted together. I might try to use a hacksaw to separate them and then glue it back together, or just drill into the bottom and somehow seal the holes once the LED's are in.
