Default Scion tC 5-SP 2nd gear has a mild power boost/step?

Has anyone else noticed that while you're on the 2nd gear, there's an increase in power delivery at some point in the rpm. It almost feels like VTEC or a mild turbo. I noticed this on both, the car that I test drove the first time, as well as on my car.

Basically, you accelerate normally (I have a light foot) and when you change to 2nd gear and continue accelerating, there's a mild power boost at one particular rpm and the engine pulls harder. I'll try and note the rpm next time.

yeah, I was thinking the same!! There is definately a pump somewhere..... but I am not sure if it's a boost of power, just feels more like a speed bump that the engine needs to get over. Mine usually happens seemingly at around 4K RPM.

That's not my point. I'm not talking about gearing at all. What I've noticed is that while you're in second gear, there's an rpm at which the engine suddenly starts pulling stronger with constant throttle input. (and it's definitely below 4000 rpm because I rarely go above 3000 rpm)

I'm going to note the rpm next time because it's nowhere close to the power/torque peak rpms. And I know I'm not imagining this because it's there on multiple tC's.

If you stomp hard on the throttle (or too gently), you probably won't notice it.

yup, this is what I've always attributed it to. I think you just enter the best part of the power band at those RPMs, which I also notice is about 4k or so... definitely noticeable above 3.5k

yea it seems that around 3800 the power seems to come on a lot stronger. i know the peak torque is at about 4000 rpms, but i think maybe the vvt-i makes a nice timing advancement at about that point.

accelerate slowly to about 3500 in 2nd then floor it.... you'll notice it picks up pretty quickly from that point.

At a lower (shorter) gear your rpms increase quickly, so you travel into and through the peak powerband faster. In other words, you feel the peak of the band come in quicker, which makes it feel like more of a pull. Plus, the lower gears will pull harder to begin with. So that is probably what you feel.

Just to clarify one more time. This is a clear and distinct transition and way below 3000 rpm (seeing that I mostly shift at or slightly below 3000 rpm)

i think i know what ur talking about. i have the stock intake resonator mod and im running without the airbox and fender tube. i drive an auto. in 2nd gear at around 3.5k my engine note becomes slightly deeper and it sounds real smooth. before 3.5k it sounds as if i hadn't done my free intake mods. in the tranny's 1st gear i dont hear it really, im guessing because there's not enough load. ill try getting a sound clip tonight, deal?

well, tonight I tried some 2nd and 3rd gear hard acceleration. Starting from 2500RPM, I still think around 4K is where there is this noticable bump.... not so much a push.

....or here for a pic.

Especially at WOT, I feel it kick in at ~4000 rpm
