Scion TC Turbo/SuperCharged or pre-owned Evo8
First, congratulations. Awesome site. Im in the market for a fun daily driver with some power and looks. Just drove a TRD SC version and was impresed. Still had room for improvement. Exhaust, Intake, IC, you all know the rest. Most of you should be very happy with your purchase, but is it logical to consider a preowned Evo8 in the low $20's vs an off-the-lot TC with Force-Induction. After all, once you've beef up the TC you should be close to te price tag of a pre-owned Evo8 averaging in the 30k miles.

Well this was my delema. I was going to by a new evo tho. But ended up with a Supercharged tC.
The people that usually own an Evo are going to beat the crap out of it. So you never know what you are going to get. I personally would rather have an EVO but the savings in price let me have alot of fun with my car.

Sort of agree. You can't really be sure what was done to that EVO unless you personally knew the owner. Especially a car like that... If I had the money, I'd go for the tC and dump some more into mods. Do up the suspension and the rest of the engine/exhaust and you've got a good ride... that's new and you know what's been done to it.
Why not STI? And i agree, preowned evo's, sti's and other pure sports cars/rally cars are going to be put through hell and back. If you really want an evo, save your money and buy a brand new one. It basically comes down to what you want. If you want pure performance, buy the Evo, if you want a nice coupe buy the tC.
If you plan on no mods to the Evo then I think it would be safe if it has low miles cause Im sure it'll still have its warranty in case anything goes wrong. But if I were in your shoes with your money Id probably just get the SC tC and mod the heck out of it. Nothing feels better than owning something brand new!

I'd check out other forums because I've heard a lot of complaints about dealerships not honoring warranties, esp the earlier Evos and WRXs. I haven't heard many complaints about the STI version though. I'm not trying to convince you to get a tC, but it's always good to know what the risks are.
What the dude Nick said. The odds are high that if you buy a used Evo it has spent it's short life having the crap beat out of it. Either that or it's a lemon. Or it was someone who couldn't make the payments and sold it. Or it just came off a lease which means it was beat on and never had the oil changed. You get the idea.
All of you guys are right. It all comes down to taking a risk. Im an impulsive buyer. Im not going to be racing, therefore, I feel that I may just be happy with a brand new TC. I just talk to my brother in law who owns RX7s and he's trying to convince me of buying one and rebuilding together. I may want to consider that route as I have the luxury of having him in my side. We are from Puerto Rico and are well connected to Rotary-Heads who will help us just in case.
I just read a magazine article on the Turbotenics kit for the Scion and I have to admit, "it keeps doing circles on my head". The TC is a beautifull car. Honestly I want something that don't mix, "power and fuel efficiency". I may be able to get a TC at a moderate power range with about 6-8 psi while maintaining ok fuel economy, better than 10 mpg. What do you all think?

When they are about the same price than you have to. Abviously the Evo is a supercar. But how many times will you unleash its potential as a daily driver. A TC with FI could be a moderate car and brand new. On the other hand, it may hunt you for ever that you bought a TC for $18,000 added a FI kit for $4,000 and you could have purchased an used Evo for about $22,000 with 30k miles. That's why Im comparing.

I was considering the same thing, but for me what made the decision was the 2 door v 4 door aspect. I think 4 door cars look bad in general, the only two I like are the RX-8 (unconventional 4 door) and the Mazda/Mazdaspeed6. I was thinking about buying a used 2-door 2.5RS and putting an STi engine in it, but I figured the cost and difficulty of doing that would make it impractical. I also needed either AWD of Front since I'm in Colorado and RWD and snow don't mix (not saying it can't be done, but I see a lot more RWD cars sliding off the road when its icy, and I didn't want to have to deal with that) , so while I've always loved the S2k, I went for the tC instead.
A Mitsu VR-4 Spyder would have been awesome, but their reliability blows chunks and they're still incredibly overvalued.
