ok so... i took off the heat sheild over my headers and painted the headers but when i stated it it started smoking, so i took paint thinner to get it off and no smoke. is smoking supposed to happen, should i put the cover back on, what should i do

 

What kind of paint did you use on the headers? The reason for the heat shield is that the headers get very hot. You could be burning the paint you put on there.

it's a manifold btw, not a header

 

You need high temperature paint.

Besides, I don't think it's pretty bright to paint your exhaust manifold (that's the hottest part of the car, after the cat).

 

Um... hopefully you used header paint, regular paint definitely isn't gonna work. Autozone/Pep boys/Walmart all sell that high temp header paint (1500*+ I think), forget the brand offhand but the can has a pic of an engine with header on it.

If you want to show off your headers. Pick up a
cheap generic one off ebay. I've seen for under $100. At least
it'll be shiny.

Some "mods" (don't know if painting stock headers classify
as a mod) just blow my mind.

Given that a lot of the aftermarket headers don't allow for using
the stock heat shield... meaning they are exposed. I would
assume the answer to your question is... NO.

Please give up on the painting idea...... and what is so special
about stock headers that makes you want to show them off?

 

well i kinda cut the cover off cuz i didnt want to take the o2 sensor off so thats why i was wondering if it would b a prob

There's a reason why engineers put heat shileds over exhaust manifolds.

I'd trust their judgement over mine.

 

^^ i agree... why would toyota spend more money for a piece of metal to cover a manifold that has little to no effect..?? I would think that it is there for heat purposes so it would block the heat from boiling the paint on the hood.. I don't think header have problems with this maybe because they are coated with something..?? maybe.. I don't know for a fact.. just my thought
