Default So I've got rattles already....

Only have 600 miles on it... babying it the whole way. Oh yeah... and its still stock.

I think that I have isolated the problem, It sounds like it is coming from the sunroof, but after fiddling around with some stuff I think that it is actually the cheap side handles above the doors that you can grab onto (not sure of the official name). I have seen posts about just about every type of rattle except this one which makes me think that maybe it isn't the handles. But I can pull on them and they sound like there are broken plastic pieces rattling around in there.

So now the question... Should I take it to the dealer and demand they fix it or should I just try taking the handles off and see if that helps? I am sure its pretty easy to get them off, but it just makes me sad that after only having the car for a little bit over a month It already sounds like its going to fall apart

So what do you think? Try to fix it or take it to the dealer?

if rattles are going to bother you as much as it sounds like they are (they do the same to me) then you're probably better off just trading in the car honestly..... i have no confidence that you (nor I) will ever have a rattle-free car.

I don't except a rattle free car for 20,000, but I don't really care whether I paid 200,000 or 20,000 I would except that I don't get rattles 1 MONTH after buying the car, that seems ridiculous to me.

the tC and rattles go together like spaghetti and meatballs. many of us had rattles from Day 1. get used to it or do what SePaTc said, trade it in.

if you do decide to fix it yourself tho....foam weather stripping is your best friend.

Yeah it's part of owning a tC. There are a few write ups on here about that. Check those out, and see if it helps at all.

fyi: foam tape weatherseal will work GREAT at bandaging sunroof rattles. I used to get a real loud air leak through the sunroof at 80+mph... i mean, wind was coming through the gap in the deflector plate, and vibrating like CRAZY. A little foam tape on the underside of the sliding glass took care of that. put some on the underside edges of the deflector too.

OP_ i agree, it is BS/ridiculous to have so many of these annoying issues when you just paid for a NEW car.

I'm not trying to sound like I'm bragging, but my Spec doesn't have the rattles that so many regular tC's have...

If you don't know already, the Spec has a one piece glass roof, but it doesn't open for any type of ventalation... kinda sucks that I can't have that open air driving experience, but then again, if the rattles are as bad as most claim to be, then it might be a worth-while trade-off...

just my $0.02...

Unfortunately I have to agree. You look at the design of the car, how all the interior panels are attached, and it becomes fairly evident the tC is prone to rattles.

I'll live with it, but had I known before buying, it might have swayed me. Even my old '91 Sentra, when it was 8yrs old with >70k miles, was much quieter and rattle free than my tC when it was new.

You had a Sentra? Nice, was it an SE-R? Mine was a '93 on NOS and it was great spanking the guys in their Camaros and Mustangs, they never saw it coming...

Ill take it apart this weekend and see if i can figure out whats causing it. If I am able to fix it I will make a how-to because I havent seen one for the handles yet.

Thanks for your replies - not exactly what was hoping for but thanks none the less.

I think someone else had noises caused by those grab handles. They had them replaced and no more noise. I think the reason was something about the return spring in the handle rattling. Dealer replaced them, no more noise.

I wish, but no, it was just an XE. Couldn't swing the extra $2k or so for the SE-R at the time, and the insurance would have been a lot more too. The 1.6 was actually decent, and overall I liked the car a lot better than the tC. In fact, if I could have bought my '91 Sentra new off the lot in '06, I'd have been willing to pay as much as I did for the tC...seriously.

I took off my oh s#!t handles tonight. Going to drive around for a few days without them to see if thats even what the noise was. I am sure I can wrap some foam tape around them if thats what it was. Will update when I find out more.
