Hm.. i c alot of you say to shift around 3k. I was just wondering, cuz i usually drive up till 2-2.5k before the engine shifts shift, and i'm thinkin that extra .5-1k diff rpm shouldnt matter that much..rite? Or is it better to go up to 3k?

I remember my Corolla regularly getting 36 MPG, but 27 MPG in the tC is worth it IMO. I could've had better gas mileage with a Camry SE running the 2.4, but then it's just not the tC.

(it would've also been at least $3K more expensive, lol)

Acetone eats rubber hoses. A car has to have special parts to run E85. Acetone is the same way. Even then, many people do not think acetone gives much, if anything.

Tire pressure, short shifting, easy gas, and being a light as possible is all you pretty much do.

One trick that I've used on my truck, my tC and my dad told me of that he used on his 72 Nova was to add 2 shot fulls of rubbing alcohol into your tank every 3-4000 miles. It helps break off any sludge or grime built up in the fuel lines and tank and burns hotter to clean out your combustion chamber. A small dose like that does not set off CELs, so don't worry. It's something to try every couple of thousand miles and seems to keep emissions lower also. Cleaner burning engines produce less harmful emissions, but use the alcohol sparingly. It burns quite hot and remember that it drys out rubber as well.

Typical rubbing alcohol is made of a mixture of either isopropyl or ethyl alcohol (ethanol) and water (usually about 30%). I would not want the water in my tank, but a little bit of pure ethyl alcohol should be acceptable.

yeah, it's usually a 70% mixture of alcohol to water to protect the plastic bottle it comes in. But b/c the alcohol absorbs water and "dries" your gas out, the little bit of excess you add will not damage anything.

But yes, a pure alcohol would be best.

haha how do people come up with these kind of ideas? so I learned that with the A/C off, you can save some gas but windows have to be closed. Another way is mixing the gas but who knows the risk in that, and I will not be willing to take that risk. I guess the only way to go is driving like a grandma

See my list of cars. I also had an '80 Corolla GTS. With all my Toyotas, no matter the engine size, I always got the best fuel economy at 70MPH (um, even when the limit was 55...OOPS!) Gee, never got a ticket, either...

At any rate, I haven't played with the tC too much; I just put the Supra away, but I was getting 33MPG at 70MPH (note, these are COMBINED MPG figures, overall backroads and highways!) with the '80, and 33-36 MPG with the 八六 (Hachiroku) and generally over 30 with ALL my Toyotas. I am a bit disappointed with the tC since the best I have done is 30 MPG, but I have only put 1400 miles on it since buying it (It has 12,750). I had a '95 Tercel with an AT that regularly scored 45MPG!

I've got a better one...do what my father does:

- Pretends an egg is under the accelerator
- Never goes about 3k rpm
- Drives 60mph on the hwy w/cruise
- Never uses A/C or opens the windows

$2.50 gas here. It's still expensive. In cali 1.5 years ago, gas was $1.80. Now that's when i'll be happy. I don't know if you guys remember, but when I was little (6 yrs old), gas only cost $1.18. You'd pop in a $20 bill and still have change left. Now those were the days...
