<Many who love the stick are not stuck with that as their only option. We have one of each at our house. It is really nice to be able to choose the auto when driving accross the LA area in heavy traffic etc.
Driving stick requires you to pay attention to an additional set of variables. Some say the stick causes them to be more alert.
If this will be your only automobile, make sure you really like the stick before buying.

Get the stick and after a month you will be driving it nicely...
Get what you want. Some of the people I have seen posted here hate the fact that they got a stick. They just want to get a auto now but would end up paying so much to trade in what they have now to get a auto. So if you want to try stick see if you could buy a old clunker with a stick & learn to drive that. If you like it (& have the money to do it) then you might want to get a manual in a tC. If you cant buy a used stick see if some one you know would teach you.
I am sixteen years old and my dad bought me my manual tC without me knowing how to drive stick. After about an hour total I had it down and now have noo problems whatsoever. Also autocrossing really helped me learn more about my car and shifting capabilities. Would highly recommend that.
Really depends case by case. I have a stick which is fine for me cause I have a long long commute on the toll road which is just flat. Good mileage and switching gears is minimal. If I worked in the city with traffic or somewhere where there are a lot of hills, particularly parking spaces on a hill, I would have gotten a manual. Sticks are a pain if you have to stop or stay in the lower gears ALL the time.
In terms of fun though, manual all the way. Just revving it up or cruising around, nothing like the feeling of pushing the engine and getting to 5th gear in a straigh away. If you're not sure, especially if you don't have much experience with a manual, borrow someones or maybe even rent one for a day or so and see how you like it. It's not for everyone and for all circumstances so you'll have to see which is right for you.

At the risk of starting another heated discussion, I am going to give my .02.
You really have to drive them both (manual and auto) to see which one will fit you the best...and think long term.
I have had the pleasure of owning both a manual trans. and automatic trans. tC. The 5-speed was definitely a blast to drive, but that's not to say that the auto doesn't go when you step on the pedal; It does, and you can feel the power of the car. I was sad to have to give up my 5-speed, but I know that in the end, my decision was right.
I have carpel tunnel in my right hand, which caused severe pain during shifting. I know it sounds stupid, but it's true. The pain flared up due to the constant strain, which made me not even want to drive my brand new car (especially at 5'oclock, when I go to work). The constant low-gear shifting didn't help matters at all. I decided to make the switch and now I am 100% happy with my car and decision.
I really miss the 5-speed, but then I remember why I had to switch to the auto. It's really a matter of preference and where/when you'll be driving it. Try them both and then make your decision. Don't let someone else make that decision for you.
