Default Sunroof...SHATTERED!!!

So...I'm sitting at Buffalo's today waiting on some friends to get there for all you can eat wings & happy hour...I'm just sitting there, AC running, talking on the phone...and all of a sudden my sunroof just shatters...I was speechless, I was like what the ____...loud as hell & pieces of glass just started falling...called the dealership & they are going to fix it (I've only had my tC for two weeks tomorrow)...so...my question...anyone else have this happen to them? The dealership said they haven't seen this happen before...I was playing my music kinda loud before (have one 12 inch sub, but didn't think that would cause it...)

Anyways...let me know what ya'll think...

Assuming it's an '06?? Sounds pretty crazy...must be some logical explanation. If not, I think you're the odd one out.

happened about 5 times so far. you might be the first 06 to have it happen.

some people say it's heat related, meaning the flexing of the glass with heat and cold air...

some people say it's because of defective glass, thats what i think

others say it's because of road debree hitting the glass

others will say it's because of the flex of the frame of the car.

Personally I think there will be a small percentage of these that just fail. Even the tempered glass used in vehicle windows and sliding glass doors, and such sometimes have a hidden flaw in them that will suddenly trigger them to craze.

I've seen it happen with a new Jeep Cherokee just sitting in the dealer's showroom with no one near: POW!!! suddenly the back window just turned into thousands of tiny cubes of glass - still sitting in their frame.

It happens. That's all I know.

That is what is nice about a forum such as this. Your dealer can't say "oh we checked and you are the first so debris must have shattered". Do a search and find like posts. Then take to your dealer so dealer AND Scion can be informed.

This problem seems to be on a very low % of tCs and you happen to have the bad luck of getting one.

Good luck on fix.

just out of curiosity what do you guys think well do when the warranty is up and this starts to happen. The glass roof has been around on a few Mercedes' and that Cadillac truck. Does anyone know if they experience some freak mishaps too?

I haven't had mine shatter yet but I have a ton of problems with it. It's been in the dealer about six times now getting it fixed. They even replaced the tracks and I still have problems with it. It keeps flexing when it's closing and it wont close all the way, the pinch protect activates and opens it back up, i'm afraid one day it is going to shatter though so every time I take my car in to the dealer I make them look at it.

FYI, here's a link to an article about unexpected failures in tempered glass:

yep, I wish I could say it was isolated.

Mine took five weeks to get back, only because it wasn't a readily available part. Good luck though, at least you're not injured!

If it happened out of warranty, I would report it to your insurance company. I highly reccomend full glass coverage/no deductible on a car that is like more then half glass!!!

i have the same problem with my sunroof. i go to close it sometimes, and once it gets to the safety point, its automatically opens on its own. i don't know what it is that's doing it, but it's only happened on really hot days here (it's been like 95+ most days). i havent taken it to the dealership yet, but if it starts to happen again, you can bet your pretty little butt that i'm taking it.

The repair on my car, which included replacing the rear glass panel and the hatch glass (because it was chipped from the roof glass breaking) and painting the trunk cost $2500 in repairs.

That's what mine looked like, except it didn't fall in the middle...I didn't have a camera though....

I see you're in Vegas...know it's off the subject, but I'll be out there visiting a few friends of mine form the 26th through the 5th of September....
