Default sunroof tint

this is gonna sound stupid,, i recently went to a great tint shop here in waco that the whole town uses for there tint needs.. and asked if they could tint my sunroof... they told me they couldnt cause it would shatter...... i have searched on these forums for same prob with other people who own scions. is this just the shops way of not wanting to do this sunroof tinting... i wouldnt know why it would shatter he mentioned the tint would retain to much heat since the sunroof is already tinted with a heat blocking tint..

supposedly the sunroof glass is double paned, and tint blocks out heat... so when u put the tint on the inside it'll block the heat from going through the 2nd layer of glass getting trapped between the 1st layer and 2nd layer, and when air heats up, it expands and over time if it expands too much it'll crack the glass to release some of the pressure inbetween the 2 layers...

or atleast thats what i've been told lol

but i can vouch for that, i tinted the glass when i had my integra and it started to crack from the corners, but idk cause it was like a 10 yr old car or cause it was tinted lol

We all need a guinea pig anyways. Glad I can help. I'll post back here when it finally shatters. (Hopefully not, love my car too much). But if it does crack then I guess it would be a good time to look into that carbon fiber moon roof replacement.

Mine is tinted and my car lives in the california sun. Going on a year with it and nothing but a cooler inside temperature. The extra headroom is nice too.

I believe this story first showed up on a Mini forum. A guy's sunroof shattered all by itself on a hot afternoon while he was away from the car. He couldn't get warranty coverage because Mini/BMW said he caused the roof to shatter by having tint installed, and he therefore voided the warranty on the sunroof.

I doubt there is really any truth to the idea of tint causing a sunroof to shatter. I've had the front and back roof glass in my tC tinted for a year and a half with no problems. In fact, if something does cause the roof to shatter, I feel good knowing that I won't be showered with glass because the film will hold it all together.
