A 21-year-old Houston woman charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident near Northwest Mall last week has turned herself in to authorities.
Monica Aguilar faces two felony charges of criminal negligent homicide and failure to stop and render assistance. She was booked on the charges and released Thursday evening after paying a $35,000 bond, said her lawyer, John Parras.
Parras said Aguilar's family contacted his law firm, DeGuerin, Dickson & Hennessy, the day after the accident. As soon as Parras learned a warrant had been issued for his client, they made arrangements for her to surrender and post bond, he said.
According to police, Aguilar allegedly was racing her silver Subaru sedan with another car on Hempstead at about 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 when she lost control and swerved onto a sidewalk, striking 34-year-old Lisa Yvette Garcia.
Garcia, who had been waiting at a bus stop, died at the scene. Police say witnesses saw Aguilar run from her car before fleeing to a nearby sports bar.
"It's a horrible tragedy for everyone involved," Parras said. "I have great sympathy for the family of Ms. Garcia, who was lost."
He declined to comment about any other aspects of the case pending further investigation.
"It's just a hard situation all around," he said. "She's a very young girl."

A Houston woman is out on bond after appearing in court Friday on charges of negligent homicide and failure to stop and render aid.

Aguilar is charged with striking and killing Lisa Garcia, 34, last Friday night in a hit-and-run accident near Northwest Mall.
Police say Garcia was waiting for a bus about 7:30 p.m. when a silver Toyota Scion that allegedly was racing another vehicle on Hempstead went out of control and hit her. She died of blunt force trauma.
After hitting Garcia, police say Aguilar left her car in the middle of the street and fled.

That is rediculous!! They left the car? Ok, then take the VIN and search who the car belongs to. Or even look in the glove box! I bet there's a name. And once you have a name, you have a face, and once you have a face, then you show everyone and someone is bound to find them!
Why do people have to be so ignorant? They killed a person, so do they think that running is the best thing to do? Their sentance will be longer if they run!!! People are really getting less intelligent as the generations go on. I feel sorry for my kids. I wish that Newton's Law of Natural Selection applied to humans too. But no, they let murderers live.
The thing I find ironic is that murderers (not so intelligent of beings) will kill off the average person (much more intelligent than the murderers will ever be) and the murderers live. So if you think about it, if the murderers are killing the average people, in the end there will be more murderers, right? It's only logic!!
Sorry, just blowing off some steam!! I get really ____ed when it comes to this stuff!

Simply astounding how idiotic people are. Street racing, killing an innocent lady and then thinking they can get away by running on foot....
Hope they throw the book at this waste of life, I have zero remorse for animals like this.
