Default tC Issues Study

This may get moved.. but I wasnt sure where it fit best...

I have offered similar ideas before, but I thought I would try one more time. With the various issues (rattles, moonroof, etc) floating around with some tC's and the poor dealership responses many complain of, I would like to put together some data regarding these issues. There are many benefits to this:

1) I have not experienced 99.99% of these issues, so I am somewhat impartial
2) With enough data and possible correlations between vin, issues, mileage, etc presented to scion in a nice format they would be much more likely to take a serious look
3) We may uncover some correlations that will help owners pinpoint the issues

If people are interested in this I would be more than happy to compile and analyze the data. Why? Well, just to help for one.. and I do own a tC so there is still a chance I will see some of these issues one day. I would like to state up front that this is NOT a place to argue, complain etc. . As a matter of fact, I would like the info sent to engifineer@hotmail.com if at all possible. This will avoid a huge thread of bickering, flaming, etc. I want data only to keep it as impartial as possible. So here is what I need:

VIN (to correllate to manufacture date)
Issues encountered
Mileage (approx if need be) that each issue occurred
Area of country it is driven in
Auto or Manual
Color (if paint issue)
Aftermarket parts installed

And any other pertinent data you can think of (drive the hell out of it, race it, aftermarket parts etc)

I will keep all information in the study confidential (not that I could really do anything with it, but I wont release anything on the site so there will be no flaming). In order to be able to tell anything we will need as much data as possible. I hope that many will use this as a chance to use the net for something other than arguing.

Ditto. If I see it here, I'll delete it.

I'll be watching the thread... so do as he asks and just email him if you have actual imformation to give.

This is NOT a "have you had this problem?" or "what should i do about...?" or "is there a fix for...?" thread.

Its ok, I have copied your info. I just suggested my email to avoid bickering. I will be watching and bumping the post either way. Thanks for the input.

I seriously doubt that the good engifineer is looking for ways to collect e-mail addresses.
I'll be sending some info his way from yet another web-mail addy...

excuse me? and what am I "phishing" for??? Am I going to do some horrible thing with everyones VIN numbers??? That are displayed in the front window for the world to see? I fail to see what you mean. I have reccommended that people stop the sensless bashing and actually do this many times. And if you look at the history of my posts I hardly think you will see any alterior motives in anything I do. So please explain what it is you mean.

I didnt think about the email thing... but I assure you that I hate spam more than telemarketers which is a pretty bold statement Just trying to be helpful as well as do a fun litttle study at the same time. Thanks for the info guys, I will post the compiled results as the data grows.

And for those afraid of the spam thing, you can post the data here. I just said it would be easier for me to collect through my email, but here will work as well.

Thanks for the info guys. So far I have only 4 replies so I dont have much to post. About the only thing I can really compare well is that the two people with moonroof issues (popping noises and/or shattering) have cars under the 65000 range (last 5 digits) and the hatch rattles seem to go on into the 06 models. Of course, I cant even make a broad generalization with a small amount of data, so for now it is just an observation. I will update when I have more data. I have other issues reported, but those were the two that seemed to have a "pattern" within the 4 I have so far.

Wouldn't toyota/scion be able to just look at actual data with actual repair work in their dealerships? I mean, everytime you bring a car into a dealer for a repair (especially a warranty claim) it goes into a computer. Its gotta be sitting in a database somewhere...

This idea might work for things where owners are annoyed by something that's not quite right but didn't bother to bring it in to the dealer. But for things where the owner brought the car into the dealer this ought to be redundant.

I'm not gonna bother with email. Issues: sunroof rattles when open at 9000 miles. Sunroof does not rattle when closed. CD player gets condensation inside when running A/C on full blast without recirculate and the sunroof open on humid days, causing CD player to temporarily stop working. Got first paint chip on front of car at about 200 miles, have about a dozen now at 10,000. (SSM). Tires wear tread quickly - at 10,000 miles I have 4/16ths left. Got a rotation at 6000 and have been very careful about air pressure. The car does not sit exactly level - the tire clearence in the left front is 1/2 inch less than the clearence on the right front and left rear, and the clearence on the right rear is a 1/2 inch more. Also, I had an issue at about 5000 miles where the sunroof would not close, but I took it into the dealer to have that fixed.

Then there's the stupid stuff that isn't really a defect, more of a design issue: The automatic transmission has a mind of its own with this goofy drive by wire system where it chooses the gear it thinks you want instead of the gear you actually want, the rear view mirrors on the sides of the car shake and vibrate when the stereo is on high volume, the high center of the gravity from the glass roof makes the car suddenly go into oversteer on abrupt throttle lift in a turn when being driven near the limits of traction, the wide a and b pillars limit forward and rearward visibility...

That's all the data I can think of. I'm probably missing some stuff.

Don't get me started on the xB...

Oh I forgot, vin is 26755.

^^ Thats the problem.. it doesnt appear that anything is being done about it. Dealerships are not recognizing many of the issues and not fixing them according to many of the experiences posted on here. So if they are not recognizing and correcting the issues then the data will never get to Toyota. With all of the poor dealership experiences and such, I thought that collecting the data and sending some results to Scion would help push them to listen a bit more. Thanks for the info.

I think that this should be a sticky, so that hopefuly this can be gathered before it's too late.

I think it's great that engifineer is taking his time to do this..
