Default ticking noise

Well just recently ive heard a distinct ticking noise from the engine when i push the car. I dont drive my car to hard, but when i do and it gets to about 4k rpms, theres a ticking noise thats comming from the engine, cant really describe it, its kinda like a noise that if u have a huge piece of gum on ur tires and ur tires are rotating like 4k rpms, thats kinda the sound it makes.... any thoughts?

Sometimes I hear my valves ticking through my intake, does it sound like valve tick, or deos it sound like a frayed belt slapping around?

Just keep the speed above 50 and you should be fine.

You could call Keanu Reeves if you start running low on fuel, don't have his number but I'm sure you could find it on Paris Hilton's hacked phonebook.

1. Check your tires for a stone.
2. Do you have a DC Sports Strut Bar?
3. Check your oil level.

If #2 applies.... PM me!

This sounds similar to what happens to subaru engines. Its called piston slap, its when your pistons hit your valves, but it only happens when the engine is cold.

Are you due for an oil change? Sometimes that will help, especially if it is piston slap.

Maybe it's just ticking cuz your car is Da Bomb... Sorry, couldn't resist

Piston slap is due to the lower part of the piston skirt warping (inward) causing more clearance between the side of the piston and the cylinder wall. The piston actually wobbles and "slaps" the cylinder wall on the way up and down. It in no way has anything to do with the piston touching the valves. In a non-interference engine, the pistons CANT touch the valves. In interference engines, if the piston touches the valves.. it doesnt simply make a noise, it destroys the valves and pistons.

No big deal Piston slap is actually fairly common in newer engines, as some require more clearance, have short pistons and have different rates of expansion and contraction. However, the slap should go away once the engine is warm. Different manufacturers specify different amounts. For example, piston knock due to slap for 1.5 seconds or less after a cold start is considered normal on a GM product.

Piston slap sounds more like a knock than a ticking noise.

I once saw a video of a GMC truck that had piston slap so bad that it seriously sounded like a diesel engine

Yep... the forums are great in that way.. everyone can share info.

The zip tie thing... now that was funny!!!!! That would drive someone nuts!

Oh and the sounding like a deisel... that is pretty close. Since they dont slap just once on the way up and down... it makes it sound similar to deisel. Kind of a rattley knock in a way.
