Toyota FT-86 to be 2011 Scion tC
Hey you guys, I've heard a lot of speculation after 2009 Tokyo auto show that the FT-86 will either be brought to the U.S. as either the tC replacement or as the new Celica.
I think they'll bring over as a Scion. It just makes sense with the timing and all.

What do you guys think? I know the styling is going to change, but will it make a good scion?

That will not be the new scion tC, that is something totally different. They will have a new tC with some styling changes but it will not be that.

Why not call it the FT-86, it's roots come from the rwd AE86, and the celica and tC are both FWD cars(except all-trac i know). Wouldn't really be true to the FT-86, celica, or tC's roots to call the FT-86 the new celica or tC.

now, naming the car is a tricky situation. they can't call it a supra unless they put an inline-6 under the hood. they can call it whole new name, but launching a new car platform with a new name requires lots of marketing and promoting to get peoples attention (look at all the tundra commercials).
calling it the celica is fine because front wheel drive was not the defining characteristic of the car by a long shot. the first three generations of celicas were front engine rear wheel drive cars. they were not front/awd until the fourth generation. the celica has however, always been a sporty stylish coupe. so reviving the celica nameplate is a perfectly fine move.

because only anime and drift nerds would know why it is called an ft-86 and the rest of the car buying public would have no interest in that name.

it wont matter much what it's called, its a rwd platform with a subaru engine in it, with a toyota badge. call it the ft-86 and people would still buy it, because the car will sell itself, not some name it will eventually have.

ehhhhhh...the corolla has been a boring but reliable car for too long the US for anybody to think of buying one as a "fun" or "sporty" car. to the general public, the corolla is what you buy when you need reliable, economical and fuel efficient transportation. people would probably look at the name "corolla coupe" and just assume it is a 2 door version of the regular corolla like the ford focus, honda civic, nissan altima, honda accord, who all have coupe based models of the sedan platforms.

woahh another one of these ____ing threads? the ft86 is NOT the 2011 scion tc, and the new tc is suppose to be out september 2011 and model yr will be 2012.

I think as long as it's in the same class (RWD, sport coupe, flagship vehicle) it would be fine as a Supra. I can't see it coming back as the new Celica, that seems like it would just cheapen it.

UGH thats a fail on ur part too Darkapathy lol. the xb, xa & xd are made/distributed in japan. the tc is made in japan but only distributed here in the US/canada
xb 1st gen= bB in japan
xb 2nd gen= Rumion in japan
xa= ist
xd= ist new version, and urban utility vehicle in europe.
the FT86 will NEVER be a scion because it wont go with scions price retail. the FT86 will be well over 20k possibly even over 25k. when scions only retail in the mid to low teens.
