Trading in for tC= bad idea?
Hey everyone, lately I have been seriously considering getting rid of my box and getting an '07 tC. Now, I have two options of course, A. Private party sell Xb, finance the difference. B. Trade in xB, finance difference. Now supposedly, I'll be able to use my dad's credit union, or I'll join one myself if necessary to grab a better interest rate.
My question is, should I just stick to craig's list and sell it myself, or will the dealers not hose me too bad for a taken care of xB with low miles?
Thanks.

trading it in to the dealer makes things much easier, but if you sell it privately you'll probably get 1-2 grand more. but then you got to post ads, meet ppl, let them test drive. and a lot of ppl are just looking and not buying (i don't blame them, we're all this way). then, depending on your fiancial situation, can you afford to buy the tC while still having the box, or do you need to sell the box first.
I got $3,500.00 for my car in a private sale.
The dealership wanted to give me $800.00.
Usually, you're much better off selling it privately. Dealerships don't usually like to take trade-ins. It costs them time and money to recondition, then re-sell the car--usually.
Also, if you can, I reccomend you go through an Internet Sale Associate. These are employees at the dealership who sell by volume. Meaning, they don't make much on each car sold, but they make money by selling a lot of cars. I found that these people were MUCH more helpful--and HONEST--in selling a Pure-Priced car like a Scion, where as regular sales people will try to get you to buy a car with a bunch of stuff on it you don't want.
If you can't afford to sell your car, then spend a couple weeks without a car, talk to an Internet Salesperson about doing a trade-in. They might even be able to find you a buyer.

i ended up trading in my truck, it had alot of work that needed to be done and trading it in made it alot easier. first see what the dealership will offer you first then go from there.
I didn't have any probs with my sales person, he actually talked me out of getting a couple things added to my tC. i ended up getting a base RS2 with exhaust. i'm sure if i had gone with one of the other dealerships i had visited my experience would not have been as good buying my scion.

Though you'll lose $ probably buy trading it in, it can become frustrating trying to sell the car privately and can waste time also. --Personal experience. I ended up trading in my previous car.
When i bought my tC we were going to trade in my dads car and they wanted to give us not even 1 grand for it when we knew it was worth more. So we took the chance, bought the tC then sold the car privately and then refinanced my tc for a lower rate. By selling it privately we got like 3000 more than what they offered us for the trade. In the end it worked out, but we were lucky it didn't take forever for the car to sell privately. But see how much they give you for a trade in and then go from there.
i know i could have gotten more for my trade ins (02 lexus es300, 02 Montero Sport xls) but trading in the cars is sooo much easier than meeting all the tire kickers and hearing "oh i don't know yet" the dealership gave me 30k for both cars and i got my '06 tC with a 7k check in my pocket..
So this seems to confirm what I guessed, trading in is easier, but you get less. Thanks guys, I guess I'll give it a polish and put it in craig's list. I update when I start the buying process.
Actually, my buddy traded in his xB recently for a tC, and he got $12,500 on his trade (JUST under 25k miles on it). I think it'd be at least worth your effort to go to 2-3 different Scion dealerships and see what they're willing to give you. Couldn't hurt, and the only expense to find out is in gas money.
I say go check it out and see what you could get at the dealer. When I traded in my 2001 Saturn to buy my tC, my dealer gave me above blue book for trade in. And that saves on sales tax too, at least in Washington State. Here, if your new tC costs $20k, and you get $4k on a trade in, you only have to pay sales tax on $16k, so that helps.
oh, and don't forget, when you trade in a vehicle you deduct what they gave you for your trade from the purchase price of the new vehicle, so there's a tax savings. For example, say you bought a base tC for $16,400, then you pay tax on that amount. If you trade in a car for $8,400, then you only pay tax on $8,000. Make sense?
