Default Transmission question?

I have an automatic and my friend was being stupid and while moving slowly was pushing on the break and put the car in park while it was still moving. There was a grinding noise when this happend.

Is this extremly bad and is my transmission screwed up? I really hope not. Crap.

Haha it honestly was my friend. I owed him for something and said he could drive it around this circular road because he wanted to. So were going slow and his phone rings and he gets nervous and does that accidentally instead of answering it while driving.

I drive and talk so I was surprised he did that.

If you weren't going too fast, then it was probably clutch chatter. Yes I said clutch. Automatic transmissions use clutches internally, and it probably pulled the gear into a bad position, causing clutch chatter. If it was gear noise then you are screwed. Either way I would take it into a shop and have the tranny fluid checked for foreign objects (metal particles).

ah, that's nothing. in driver's ed(way back when). we went out in groups of 3 to drive(plus 1 instructor). well, this girl in my group is on the highway and the instructor tells her to pull over and stop the car so we can switch drivers. we're doing about 65 and she throws it into park. the thing ratches to a stop and leaves us bobbing violently forward and backward. her excuse??? 'I thought that park meant that's the gear you put it in and it parks itself'. we drove it back, but i heard they had to tear that tranny apart in auto shop the next day.

It really scares you to think of people like that and pass. Everybody had one though. Mine had a kid that jumped a curb ran down 2 signs. Then he freaked out floors it goes back across the road and jumps the curb over there and hit more signs. Good thing the teacher got the key out before he hit anymore stuff. He also thought hard soled shoes meant cowboy boots. And yes he passed.

The trans will be fine. The noise you heard was the parking pawl ratcheting. It will do this when you do that. Normal. Doing that- NOT normal. Stop doing that. Punch your friend and don't let him drive anymore.
