Ugrading to TRD 18" Wheels? Be careful.
I ordered and received an '07 tC in November '06.
I ordered the TRD 18" wheel & tire package as a factory option. I questioned the price of the upgrade and was assured the $1565 I'd be paying was the "difference" in price between the stock 17's and the optional 18's. Thanks to a discussion on Scionlife I discovered that isn't the case. Scion dealers in my area and around the country are selling the 18" package for precisely $1565. If you just want the wheels they are $872 a set.
I called Scion to register my concerns. The first answer I've received was, "the $1565 you paid was the difference in price between the 17" tires and wheels and the optional 18" package". After explaining the math to them and waiting a couple of days the new answer was, "the optional 18" EMX Super 7's w/Pirelli P Zero Nero M+S tires are the same price retail as they are as an upgrade". They also told me that the dealer is in no way obligated to return the stock tires and wheels to you if you go in after you bought a stock tC and get the upgraded set installed. From Scion's perspective they seem to be saying they are free to steal your property and sell it to someone else.
Is this just Scion legal spin? Do you think this ethical? Part of my frustration is due to the fact that I should have researched the value of the optional package before I committed to it. I really don't like feeling like an idiot.
Thanks for all the great contributions to this site,

In your case, I would suggest just picking up the 18s from the dealership, then go have them installed somewhere else to ensure the safety of your current 17s. You'll then be able to sell the 17s to a 3rd party and basically be paying for the "upgrade."
But the other thing, ya that is screwed up. This seems like a good way around it though.

Sounds kind of weird, I think they are thinking, like if you wanted the after market door seals in stead of the plastic they keep the plastic and you get the pretty ones. That sound like what they are trying to pull, but for that price I would have ordered the wheels from Les Schwab and keep the stock wheels for winter.

Having the dealer tell me I was paying the difference in price between the two sets is what's bothering me. Was I a sucker? Seems like it. Was it dishonest on the dealers part? Did the dealer know this wasn't true?

they know what they are doing next time go talk to NWSCIONMAN at Toyota of Puyallup even just to ask question before you buy anything from another dealership to make sure their not ripping you off.

This is why I don't put the 18's on any stock units. It's port installed, or they don't get them. The dealers do not get anything back for returning the wheels. In fact, when they are port installed, they send the original alloy's in the back of the tC. We take them out (because most folks don't want them) and keep them in the parts wharehouse in case we need to replace any originals.
I have no idea why the wheels cost 1068 at port, and then 1565 + labor at the dealer. It's one of 3 pricing discrepencies that Scion has been unable to rectify. Same issues happen with ground effects and iPod radios.

lol, the 18s are played out.. too many people with the tc have them and they are way overpriced. For that price you could get whatever 19s you wanted, and sell your 17 inchs tockies for $400 on a forum. Get the stock wheels and go aftermarket..

I believe you're entitle to the stock 17's. When I bought my car i tossed the idea about going with the 18's and my first question was whether or not I get to keep the stockies and I was told for certain they are mine. I decided against it cuz I'm going with some enkie rsv's in the spring. But yeah I would definitely get them wheels.

more a mistake on your part for not doing proper research... but most times yes.. they need to take your stock rims and return them to the factory.
you might've be able to keep them if you requested well beforehand and made arrangements.

I upgraded to the 18's. And the dealer kept my stock 17's. At first, they told me that I would have to pay for the tires too! Can you believe that? After arguing with them about how on the websire, it says "wheels AND tires", they tried to tell me I was wrong. So, they said to "offset the cost of the tires...we will have to keep your stocks wheels and tires." I didn't know any better.
I went to Miami for the Scion Event and was told by other tc owners that the dealership ripped me off. They told me to contact Scion HQ.
I talked to Scion Headquarters and they told me that the dealer is NOT supposed to keep the stock wheels/tires and that the cost did include 18" Enkeis AND Pirelli tires.
I went to the dealership (after Scion contacted them) and luckily, they still had my stock tires/wheels. They gave them back to me and I turned around and sold them to someone I knew the next day.
