I'm sure allot of people like myself knew about dry rot but never knew that stores where selling old tires as new. I never knew until now about the code either so it was news to me. next time I buy tires I'm going to make sure that they are "NEW" new.
Example:
1402
14(equals week in year)02(equals year made (2002)

edit: i just checked my kumho's. 2 of them were 23/06 and other 2 were 32/05
i purchased them together in feb. 07 from discounttire.com. so half of them was about
9 months old and other half was 19 months old when i purchased them. interesting....

yeah, the date code has been there for sometime. but i'm glad that you posted this! it's important for everyone to know! And the rule is no tires over 5-6 years old. I draw the line at using tires 4 years old (like in storage).

I think this might be an issue for folks buying tires for their SUV or old sedan, but I seriously doubt it impacts any tC owners-- most of us ride on Z-rated tires, and I know that the Lion's Share of Cali and Florida drivers are on ultra-high performance tires. These types of tires have short production runs, generally only 2-3 years between improvement, redesign, or replacement.
Out of curiosity, I just checked mine. I bought all four Falken FK451s from Discount Tire Direct in September of '05. All four tires are marked 2205, meaning they were manufactured in the second week of June, roughly 3 months before I bought them-- and I bought them the year they were discontinued and replaced by the FK452.
Trust ABC news and 20/20 to make a whole mountain range out of three or four molehills.

Saw that video clip a while back too. Mine are 1408 (bad number combination I know, lol). Last week of March/First week of April of this year. So I'm good for a long time. WOOT.
I agree with the Doc on the risk of SUVs vs. the tC. However, it does still run a risk when we take hard turns and such with aged tires. Nothing like tires getting ripped apart when taking a hard turn on a hill. But then again, if we have performance tires, we'll have already replaced the tires before they even expire.
At least we know how to check the tires production date now.
