Well it wasn't my wind deflector that shattered....

Wonderful. I just rolled 2000 miles.
I was driving with the roof closed, and this is the result. Nothing hit it, nothing was in front of me. This sucks.
not a darn thing was happening, just cruising down the road with my wife. We were on a flat familiar road, nothing out of the ordinary. All of the sudden, we hear this unbelievably loud bang, and the sound of the glass crumbling. I wasn't sure if it was my front or rear one at first.
You guys know those clear bras plastic film things you put on headlights so they don't break? Maybe we need something like this to be put on the whole moon roof? Think that would help? I just don't know where we can get such a big piece... I guess a regular tinter would be able to help. What do you people think?

By the way, maybe you should report it to the nhtsa at
www.nhtsa.gov
You could save lives by doing so. Have your VIN when you do it.

Thanks, I'll absolutely take care of that in the morning.
jaydub, that may very well be true... after all... I don't really see a clear point of impact (something that warranty would not cover)... everything from each of the 4 corners seems to have "exploded"... so maybe it is a stress thing... I wonder if there's any way to check for it when first getting a scion.

I noticed that most investigation by the nhtsa lasts about 4 months... they have been investigation this potential roof defect for about a month... so hopefully in 3 months this will be solved...
Problem is, the NHTSA investigation is for the front wind deflector, according to the link I found on some other topic here. I don't know if that means that it won't include all glass parts of the roof or not, but I'll still submit a report.
after reading the posts a while back about the deflector and main roof blowing, i started looking up when my sunroof is open and, dang it bounces about. kind of freaky. i quit opening it after about 40 mph. but the rear blowing out gives new meaning to the problem. it appears the glass doesn't have a structural responsibility so i wonder if it is just too thin.
alright... I'm going to bed... needless to say, I know you'll keep us updated. It's us little people that can keep this brand respectable by keeping toyota in check. Message to toyota in BustaRhymes' voice: "We got ya'all in CHECK! And if ya don't do what right We gonna put an END! bye bye scion brand its check and MATE" ok... just gettin' a little creative, I still love scion.
i just had mine checked out at the dealer because of the flexing and popping, they said that my screws to the housing were loose and they tightened the up. It works a lot better right now but i'm still afraid of something like that happening to mine, I think i'm going to print that pic and take it to my service guy and see what he says. thanks for the post now they might actually believe me when I say that peoples roofs are shattering.
