In terms of technical I don't think it hurts your engine much because the reason you stall is that your engine isn't rotating fast enough (rpm is too low). Kind of similar to what happens when you turn off your engine. I'm not an expert, so take my advice with a grain of salt. However it kills your moral in your ability to drive a stick. Especially during rush hour traffic and everyone's blaring their horn at you.

I tried Googleing it and found nothing on it. But I think what hurts the engine more is if you over-rev it.

Yeah! I know what you mean about damaging the engine. I think my friend was a little hesitant to let me learn on his beat up 240SX because of the same issue. But from a tech standpoint, I don't think you're hurting your engine.

But it's cool, keep at it and you'll pick up the clutch point in no time. It only took me a couple hours on a parking lot to finally get use to my friend's clutch. However I think it was easier to learn on his used car than a new car because the clutch wasn't grabby as a new one would be. It was already broken in, so it was a little smoother during learning. I think I was more worried about burning up his clutch rather than what the engine stalling did.

edit: Forgot to add, That's a nice looking ride!

I, like most, would say over-rev your car a little over stalling out.. it won't take long to learn stick.

Yeah.

And stalling doesn't hurt the car (and since you have a rev-limiter and can't over-rev it, you don't have to worry about that.) The only thing stalling hurts is your pride. You'll get used to it soon. Hell, I even stalled my new tC a couple of times, and I've been driving manual transmissions for over a decade.

I was wondering about that rev-limiter. . . since it is designed to cut out before you damage your engine, is it REALLY ok to bounce off it? I winch everytime I accidentally do that.

Hahaha, when have you heard me? I don't do it from lack of skill, honest! It's either from shifting too fast, or reverse gear being stubborn.

That is the most painful sound ever! I just realized tongiht DO NOT put the car into reverse even when moving ever so slightly! Even in reverse. Man I shudder every time.

What happened after that? Did it do a lot of damage? I'm always paranoid of inclines. I'll probably use my e-brake until I'm 100% confident.

Just disengage the cluth everytime you feel it jerking. In low speeds on the tC, you have to hold the clutch in a little while giving some gas to keep it smooth, otherwise you'll be jerking because of the torquey engine. As a beginner, I think I've stalled ~10 times since I got my tC but now I've got the hang of it. Not sure if that's too much or good. I'm still iffy on the inclines though.

This was mentioned in another thread, but he may be liable for damages. There are rules in almost every state that say a driver must follow at a safe distance. . . even at stoplights. If you are on a hill, you are SUPPOSED to give other drivers room, just in case of roll back/stall.

It's hard to prove, but if you did not roll back a helluva lot, then you may have a case against him.

Dunno if my route is legal. . . but if someone is too close to me, I get out, and tell them to back up. Maybe "tell" is putting it mildly.

I've found that double-clutching works for reverse. It's exactly the same as what I've had to do for the last 10 years in my previous car, so it's no big deal for me.
