What if the tC was...
Ok, many people complain about the tC for it's crappy interior, heavy body and rattling joints.
What if:
The tC had the same look (still FWD), Lexus like interior, lighter body, no rattles and same price. However, you had to give up:
2.4L engine, instead you get the Corolla 1.8 125hp
No ABS (optional) front disc/rear drums
No glass roof, no sunroof
No 17's 15in alloys instead
I guess it's basically a next gen Celica.
I know I wouldn't buy it. I'd probably buy a base RSX or Impreza.

I don't even mind the weight; I didn't buy this car so I could be the fastest. I don't find much luxury in a woodgrain steering wheel, or leather seats, etc. And I love the 2.4 2AZ and the 17" wheels, and swapping out those for 15" winter wheels that still let me maneuver through snow and slush.
I can hunt down and dampen the rattles, or I can just turn up the radio.
Though it would be interesting to see a Lexus'd tC. Maybe a V6, going easy on the luxury interior bits to focus on performance, and keeping the base price under $30 or so.

Unfortunately, some people compare the tC's interior with a $50,000 luxury car and say it's crappy. Go figure.
But if I don't take price into account, the interior is made of cheap plastics. There are slight gaps in the interior. One of the cupholders in the rear has about a 3mm opening that won't snap shut. The gauge cluster moves if you play with it a little.
My wife has a Solara and the interior is as close to a lexus as one can get. But it's an expensive 4 banger car. $21,000 for a Solara seems high, but it is close to Lexus quality compared to my Scion.
take a look at GM's interiors. Hard unforgiving plastic, with some pieces that don't make sense, and seams galore. Mentally comparing the tC to the Chevy Equinox, Chevy Cavalier, etc., it comes out ahead. If you want a laugh, go to Edmunds and look at the Saturn Ion interior; makes no sense to me at all.
Comparing a tC to an IS350, G35, etc. isn't very fair. And for some, the fit and finish of the interior doesn't rank as highly as the functionality of it.
My mom has an '04 Celica; I like the tC better. When she bought hers, the tC had just become available, but she went for the Celica instead. To each their own.

That's an 06 Ion Interior, for what arbnpx was talking about. Looks like utter ____.

I rode in a Cobalt 2 weeks ago, rental car, and I was actually surprised with the interior, with respect to the car's price. I started pounding on the plastic panels and no rattles. The plastic also doesn't feel as cheap.
When I feel the trim around the tC's gauge, it feels a little rough, a little sanding of the plastic would've been cool. But like I said, for the money, it's a great car. It would be a rip off if Toyota sold the tC with the Corolla's engine. However, since we get the Camry's it's a great deal over all.

I guess the only complaint I have is the weight, for that I would get rid of the glass roof.
As far as motor, if they kept the weight down to 2500-2600 lbs, and used the 1.8L, the tC would be even more of a Civic/Cobalt competitor. It wont perform the same as it does now, but it will get better gas millage.

idc this is my every day car. so i want comfort, convenience, and performance/astethics (if i spelled that right) if i had a race car, id complain then. but kaminari makes a fiberglass or c/f roof. makes it 50lbs lighter but its 1000
I have had multiple cobalts for rentals... and they have crappy interiors. Not the worst out there, but my tC doesnt rattle after 43k, and it is an 05. The rentals typically have 5k or so on them.
But as far as that "heavy" glass roof, the whole assembly weighs in at about 70 lbs. Sure, it is 70 lbs high up on the car, so if you are a serious track guy it will come into play (when you decide to make your car a stripped down race car) but for the rest of us it is pretty negligible.

You bring up a really good point. When all is said and done though, the TC is still only a $17-$18 k car. Realistically, do you really expect lexus quality for that price.
With that said though, I believe it is the best car for the money on the market!!!
