Default Why is Geico so cheap?!

I recently received the following quotes for auto insurance:
Geico: $787/6 mths
Allstate: $1050/6 mths
Progressive: 1150/6 mths

Each was priced with the same coverage, limits, and deductibles.

Note that Geico doesn't have the Scion tC in their system yet. Inorder to insure a tC with Geico, you must have your VIN. Since I haven't received my car yet, I don't have a VIN.

Just so you know, I got the opposite in quotes, so it all depends on your agent/situation: (only allstate had it online in their system, SF and Geico based off price, Progressive agent called for a database number on the tC)

-6 mo's
State farm $1000 (agent)
Allstate $950 (online)
Geico $920 (phone)
Progressive $740 (agent)

Geico is generally cheaper if you have a spotless driving record. However, I believe they have a "Zero Tolerance" policy for violations, so even a single speeding ticket could send your rates through the roof. They actively lobby for lower speed limits and to outlaw radar detectors. They're generally loathed by people who enjoy responsible, spirited driving (and those who feel speed limits are set artificially low.)

this is my theory on cheap insurance...The company knows young teens dont have money...and they also know they drive wrecklessly...after one speeding ticket...thats where they get their money...

im getting AAA...i think they are the best bang for the buck...

My mom works as an insurance agent, and when we went to buy the car, the dealer asked her what the insurance would be. She told him that pretty much no company has the tC in their system yet, and when a rate is given, its just based on the price of the car. Even if you were to give the vin number, no car would come up, and they would just check the price of the car and give u a quote based on that. Then down the road when the car comes up in the company's registry, most likely your rates will change. Also companies insure differently based on age etc, some may do it one way, some may do it the other. So you most likely wont get accurate quotes from anyone until the car becomes more well known and the systems of the companies will be updated. According to my mom, the updates will take probably 4 or 5 months to happen.

And you may find 21st Century and Mercury much less. It does depend on your situation, but considering how easy it is (fill out a form on a web site), it would be dumb not to shop around. For my (non-tC) car:

$513 Mercury
$620 21st Century
$900+ Farmers

Mine is $1040 / year... with AIG. This is based on the type of car and the price of the car.... they don't have anything in their database yet on the tC...

Just everyone be glad your not in MA (or NJ for that matter) where the likes of Geico, Progressive and Allstate won't even insure us. I'm paying $2200 a year for insurance on my tC, and that's with a clean driving record.

State Farm had Scion's in their system. They asked me which I had: xA, xB or tC.

tC, clean record, multi car disc, 250 ded., = $480/6mo for me.

Be careful about GEICO

I signed up with them because they seemed to have the cheapest rates, but then when I got my first bill it was about $300 higher than my quote. I called them and they said it was because I had an incident on my record.

This "incident" was nothing more than me barely scraping the top of a shoddy motel overhang in a rental truck. Although they called the cops to get an accident report, it turned out that I didn't do any damage and my old insurance co. didn't have to pay anything, but the fact that it was on my record bumped my rates up a ton.

I can't imagine how bad they'd be if I had actually gotten into a REAL situation where I'd need them. When I get my tC I'm going to drop GEICO like a hot mother and switch back to State Farm.

I think I may switch. I have AAA right now, and I feel like I am getting screwed by them. I think mine is around $900/6 months...possibly more.

I just turned 25, and have my homeowners insurance through them also, so I should get some kind of discount. I have high credit (over 700 for sure)....for some odd reason AAA goes off of credit rating too. No points on my license either....just crazy.

We'll see.....I know a couple other places gave me a few lower quotes.

amazingly enough geico was my cheapest rate as well. I think like someone else said is because it is such a new car that the insurance companies do not know what to insure it for. When i called geico for a quote the agent told me to hold on while he talked to his manager and after a few minutes he gave me a price that was around just 50 dollars more every 6 months then the price for an xA insurance cost. You give it a year though and im sure those insurance rates will change.

tC geico=864/6 months and im 20
xA geico around=low 800's cant remember every 6 months
everyone else wanted 2000+ per 6 month coverage....i say screw that

at first i got the quote from the agent of statefarm and it came out to be $680 for six months. he didnt had the car in the database and gave it to me according to the price of the car. then when he got the papers back from regional, the insurance came out to be 984 per six months. I am in Illinois , 24 yrs, not married, good driving record, if any other company can do better, let me know.....please

man you guys have it easy I've got two points Gieco's quoting me $3000 . So far my best bet is 21st with $1600 and I've checked just about every company there is. The First ticket was my stupidity, but the 2nd is total BS. Now I have to wait three years before I can get a decent rate.

Here's a tip if a company doesn't have tC in the system check you quote with the Mazda3 hatchback. From what I've heard the tC should be slight cheaper (if you have the side airbags)

I have had Geico for the last 7 years, and they have been very good...My last car was totaled in July, and they gave me 13,000 for it, and I had a $500 deductable, so I got about 12,500. I was able to pay off the loan on the totaled car, and my new insurance went up only $9 dollars a month...
