Default Why you should Change your Own Oil

So, i've only had 2 services done by Toyota and my last two done by me. To me, when you change your own oil, you take special care into it vs another car on the jacks at a shop.

So, i've been trying to convice my mother to let me change her oil in her First On Recall Day, 07 Ford Expedition. So far, she rather have people who are trained to do it, do it.... lol

Well, i decided to check out the powerful V-8 and found this.......

The oil cap was gone...... IT's been a thousand miles since her last oil change so, and i know, a oil cap doesn't just, pop off.....

I found oil splatter all over the engine and dirt in the oil drain tube. Now i'm not sure, but i believe that dirt getting into the internal parts of your car is, REALLY BAD. not to mention water getting down it or who know what else. Also, the oil was about gone, IT was at the min mark after a 1,000 miles.

But, here the best part, I found the oil cap, PLACED in between a The Radiator and some Hose in front of the engine. Now if the cap "blew off" it wouldn't have been placed FACE UP wedged in front of the engine, in which it was obviously placed there.

Honest mistake by the mechanic, but 1,000 miles later and no oil could of put a brand new car into a TOTAL costly over haul.

So all the more reason to learn the 3 Step process to change your own oil.

Oh another Note, How should i go with this to the Ford Dealership? Any Advice? My mother wants me to do it since i know a little more about cars.

Call and talk to the service manager at the dealership. If they try and say that you left it off and it's your fault just tell them that you are gonna file a complaint with BBB, Ford and that you'll take your Expedition to another dealer and that they will never see any business from you again.

This has happened to me before. I had popped the hood after the oil change after about 50 miles so it wasn't quite that bad. At least the shop replaced the cap they lost.

I got three free complimentary oil changes from the dealership after purchasing the car. But after those three, I've done it myself every time. It's a little bit more of a hassle than taking it to get done, but at least I know it's being done right and not by some guy that probably doesn't give a ____ about my car.

the only time I take my car in for an oil change is when it either to damn cold out side or raining really hard. and I take it to the same place, It a quick lube type place. I stand right by them while they are working and talk to the guys working on my car. I bring my own oil and filter the few times I been there and they only charge me 12 bucks for the labor. But the first post is why I don't trust shops. Just from being from a family that has owned 5 repair shops. I know what can go wrong with a car. Not cause the shop is bad, Just cause they get so busy the simple stuff gets forgotten.

you can do your own maintenance. if the problem pertains to you screwing up, then it's void.....

and i thought you said your mom didn't want you doing it...then you say she DOES want you doing it...?

cause one of the guys in Scion Evolution is a Scion salesman and he said as long as u keep the receipt to the oil filter and the oil that it won't harm the warranty. But we can't check all the stuff that they supposedly check when u do it urself. I have a maintnence required light on and was debating to change it myself or let the dealership do it and risk them either..

a) slam my CF hood down too hard and it crack or bend
b) spill oil all over my clean engine bay
c) scratch my paint with something
d) get oil or something on my Corbeau red seats
e) curb my wheels
f) god knows what else they could find to do wrong

^^ yeah that's exactly what i'm scared of, if there's any damage to my car, i'd rather know that i did it! and if i ever have to do take it in, i stand and watch like an effin' hawk!

well in at ft myers scion they give lifetime warranty with all new vehicles you have to do certain things like get your cars oil changed every so many miles at a certain licenced place like tuffy and have receipts to prove it if you want to get something fixed after the original 60k warranty is up they just make it a little harder to get stuff fixxed afer 60 k but will still do it if you have kept up to their standards..

The service manager that oversaw my last free oil change told me that if I keep my receipts from the parts store where I buy my oil and filter to show the date, then they would consider that as good as having records of changing the oil themselves.
