Default Brake question

Ok, well after yesterday when some a$$hole with a trailer pulled out infront of me and i had to slam on my breaks and swerve into somebodies yard to avoid hitting him, i decided that i need to upgrade my brakes. I know nothing about brakes. Im guessing I should get steel braided brake lines, change fluids, and get new pads/rotors, but I dont know the specifics of any of it. any advice?

did you engage ABS? if so, your brakes are fine.

get stickier tires... that'll help more than pads/rotors.

SS brake lines are for pedal modulation/feel. it does not to decrease braking distances.

Higher temp fluid is for brake fade. run motul and you'll have better brake feel when running on a track, but on the street, waste of money.

If your pads/rotors are worn, then yeah, replace them...

least you're ok!

ABS is where it feels like its going "bump bump bump" right? If so thats what it did, was going about 50 and i was really close to hitting the guy. To me I felt the car should have stopped better than what it did. My car has 18000 miles on it so I figure the brakes should still be fine. I was just wondering what would make the car stop faster, aka safer.

Depending on how you drive, you could start purchasing your brake components now. (Rotors, pads, etc.) Then in about 7K miles (again, it depends on how you drive, road conditions, etc.), you can upgrade your brakes. This is the route I am taking. Its nice to purchase components at leisure and not worry about plunkin' down some mad $crill for an upgrade.

you ABS kicked in. the "clicking" noise you hear was the calipers opening and closing, to prevent your brakes from locking up, and you sliding into that truck. ABS is also the reason you were able to turn away from the truck to avoid it.

first you need to upgrade your tires because stock tires are 100% crap. you could have the best brake system in the world, but if your tires are crap, your still gonna slide.

SS lines you dont really need to worry about, like the one user said, its for pedal feel. SS lines will last longer than OEM rubber lines, but they are not needed for street use.

when you are ready, you can upgrade just your pads to either hawk or axxis pads, and that should be enough for you. new rotors that are drilled, slotted, vented, or all of the above will just allow the heat to dissipate more, and is typically useful when brakes is engaged alot, of brakes from a high speed to a low speed at a rapid rate.

over all. get new pads when you are ready. that should to the trick, and you wont be spending alot to do it.
