Default Coilovers or Springs? wat brand/kind?

ok guys/girls. i am new to this car stuff so bare with me pls

i have read through previous post but still cannot decide on what to get.
I want my car to be lower, but not to low to where i am scraping on dips/bumps. I also dont want it to low because i will eventually be getting some type of lip kit on my car.

i think coilovers would be nice because i can adjust the height. but i have read that people say it is to bouncy. is there a certain kind that would fit my standards as far as me being a daily driver?

as u can see i am really confused, lol, and can use some help.

also, if i were to buy coilovers or springs, wat other future upgrade will be needed, and how soon.

thanx guys.
i really appreciate it

Im running K sports. They are alittle bouncy, but I have got alot of that out and the ride is pretty damn good right now. Rides smooth and handles awesome.

IMO the biggest issue with buying coilovers is that you get what you pay for. Most of the complainants I've read have been about the less expensive models that either don't have adjustable dampening or don't have spring rates that compliment the dampers. If you go cheap, you'll likely get a harsh, bouncy ride. If you make an investment in the performance of your tC, you'll likely end up with vastly improved handling without compromising comfort.

I have H&R coilovers installed on my tC (here's my review: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...light=coilover ). I find the ride to be slightly stiffer than the TRD shocks/springs, but it is far from bouncy. They don't have adjustable dampening because they don't need it; H&R got it right the first time by properly matching the dampers (shocks/struts) with the proper spring rates. They cost a few hundred dollars more than other coilovers with the same features, but they come with a level of quality not found in many of the more expensive models.

I hope this helped.

if you got the money, i would recommend the Tein SS-P's along with the EDFC (this way YOU can control how stiff or smooth your car rides). My buddy has them and the ride is great and the EDFC adjusts the rate so it can be maxed out for track use (which it seems you might not partake in) and can lower it for a more comfy ride.

Save yourself money and buy the TRD lowering springs. It will work perfectly for you. The drop isn't too low yet it wont look like its stock. So once you get your lip kit, scraping will be the last you youo'll be worrying about. Don't get coil overs, you'll never need the adjustibility of it. TRD Spring is the way to go especially for you.
But if you feel like the ride isn't that smooth or that its not right, you can always get a set of TRD shocks to match it up for a better ride.

Coilovers shouldn't be bouncy, merely very firm compared to stock. If they are bouncy it is because they have the dampening adjusted to harshly.

Tein makes a very good coilover, the Basic, thst are height adjustable, but have no dampening adjustability. If you want a more tunable ride the SS system (Super Street) offers 16 levels of dampener adjustement to suit most driving styles and road conditions.

If you just want springs Tein has H.Techs and S.Techs. The Hs are a softer (still firmer and lower than stock, and the S.Techs are a fairly hard spring.

See details here:

Your best bet would be TRD springs, anything lower than 1.25 and you run the risk of having to purchase struts and shocks in a shorter amount of time.

And stay far, far away if someone tries to sell you coilovers for $500.

Like 2fast4you, I have H&R coilovers. I don't know how they are compared to other brands, but I can tell you they've exceeded my expectation. A comfortable ride was priority for me and that's just what I got. They are not bouncy either so that's a plus.

But if your budget is under 5, then springs are the way to go!

Don't forget to get an alignment after you have it lowered.

On average, I don't think you have to change struts in 10k-20k with H-Techs, but you do increase your chances of having to; there have been a few folks here that have had blown struts. You start increasing your risk after a 1.25" drop, I wouldn't go lower than 1.5" without getting TRD or Koni struts... which would put you well outside of your budget.

One thing to keep in mind is that you are modifying your car, and if you can't cover the cost of any possible complications you shouldn't do it. If you're not ready to invest in a new set of struts, play it safe and go with TRD.

I don't know how much the stock struts are, but the TRD struts are about $455. There are many shops here in SoCal that will charge $80 per hour for the install and it should take between 2 to 3 hours.

Definitely get an alignment a week or two after you install the springs, they'll need a few days to settle. You'll need to purchase camber bolts in order to get the alignment back to spec. I suggest ordering some from Toyota (Part# 90105-17011), they go for $11 a pair and are usually available in 24 hours or less. Have them installed when the spring get installed or your alignment shop will charge extra.

As far as the lip kit goes, you should be OK if you exercise some caution. However, I have a stock body and a 1.75" drop in front and I barely clear standard size parking blocks... be careful when parking!!
