Default Opinion on suspension set up

Im going to be changing my suspension set up here in the next month, but just cant make up my mind on what to get. these are my choices>>>

1. Tein Basics- I'm not big on "Slamming" my car, where i live the pot holes are crazy. The only reason im considering these is so that i can have the Adjustment.

2. TRD Struts, Hotchkis Springs- Heard this set up was pretty good, i like the drop of the Hotchkis, but i also have heard that they are super stiff.

3. TRD Struts, TRD Springs- The drop looks good, and i heard they where good for daily drivers.

These are my 3 choices, also considering H-Techs, but idk alot about those, im open for suggestions!!!

1) Do you really think you'd be adjusting them? Ever? I think lots of people get coilovers saying they want the adjustability... but really think about it... when would you adjust them?

2) Eh... the Hotchkis has a nice look, but a) they're pretty low and b) they're pretty stiff. I drove on them for about 3 yrs. I had other issues with mine, but it took me that long to realize how stiff they are.

3) Not a bad choice. Decent look, nice ride, not too rough. Also consider maybe H&R Sport springs (what I have now). Similar drop (tiny bit lower) and still a good ride.

i vote 1.

that way if you ever decide you wanna go lower or raise the car you have the option too and you get the ride height you want, not the ride height that someone else picked out for you

Ack- never thought of it that way, when will i adjust it? Im going to look more into the H&R springs, but im pretty sure im going to go with the TRD struts over the Teins.

thanks for the input everyon!

think about this tho.

you spend the money on springs and shocks, your stuck at 1 setting.

what if a year later you want to go lower? youre gonna have to buy a new suspension.

not if you have the basics. if you want to go lower, take the wheels off and turn the collars down, bam a whole new stance in a couple hours, instead of waiting for new springs to come in, pay for the new springs, install the new springs and then be stuck at one more setting again.

just because you wont be adjusting them all of the time doesnt mean that having the adjustments isnt worth it.

dave you def. have a good point, but im not looking for that big of a drop. just like and 1.5" i like the look of a car slammed on coilovers, but its really not my style. and ya maybe i will get bored with the stance but, i can always buy another set up.

why waste the money tho, think about the long run. what if you change your mind?

what if you put your new set up on and its not what you wanted?

just think about it, also at the right ride height the ride wont be as rough as you think....

i've had 1 set of springs and 3 sets of coil overs (i like to try new things, i dont regret any set up i had).

the springs i got bored with so fast. saved up and found a set of H&R coil overs.... loved them, got to see how my own car would look slammed and i loved it.... i wanted to upgrade to somehting that offered adjustable dampening so i sold the H&Rs and got the HKS coil overs. those where amazing but didnt offer me the adjustablity that i wanted. so i finally landed a sick deal on the Zeal coil overs i have now which have adjustable ride height, dampening and camber adjustments. i couldnt be happier with these. and if i get sick of the drop i can change it, if i get sick of teh drivablilty i can soften the ride or tighten the ride, if i need an alignment i can do so easier with the camber adjustments, and if i get agressive wheels i can customize the suspension enough so the wheels fit.

its not always about... are you gonna adjust them enough to make the purchase worth it. its what are you gonna get for your money.

the basics will give you any option you want for a ride height, where as springs will just give you 1 set.

i think for an entry level coil over the basics are ok.

i would say get a little more money together (maybe <100 or so) and get the H&Rs i have heard that no matter teh ride height the basics give a harsh ride, but i know from personal experiance that the H&R are very comfortable coil overs. and with a mild drop they will ride and handle very nicely.

basics are pretty much there to give the budget builder a more racey feel, i think the germans hit the nail on the head with the H&R coil overs and you get great performance with a pretty good ride.

i believe allsprings.com has them for 975 shipped or so, but if you look around you can find them for less. i know it sounds like a lot, but you get a lot, you get shocks with springs that where designed to work together, with the ability to make your car look/ride/perform the way you want.

i found them for a lot less then that.

search the classifieds, ebay google, look around im sure you can find them for a great price.

also check out Nurspec, tell Geoff that you talked with me about it and im sure he'll help you get the best price.

i would have to agree with everything that davedave is saying because you might say i want it to be lower or higher and with coilovers you'll be able to adjust them, sure you don't want them for autocrossing but for daily driving they should be fine and if you ever wanna switch up your wheels you can adjust it to where you won't be rubbing like crazy.

what are the goals of your car ? I used to have the tein basic coil overs as well as the Ksports. Found I would slam the car and leave it, I would never adjust it for better handling. I bought trd springs and now have trd shocks. The drop is something that will grow on me. but the car feels good. I know it will handle better than my previous set up. With the trd's you have better suspension geometry and better handling. you can get the same with coilovers but once u get them your just going to go lower and lower and lower and end up with a car with worse handling.

General goals for the car is to have a nice daily driver, that can handle just about any curvy road i throw at it. plus i want to start auto x-ing sometime in the future.

Again thanks for all the input guys its really helpful!!!
