Default question about front strut

So i lowered my car a couple weeks ago but I think when i re-assembled the front driver side strut i put that soft washer shaped looking piece back in the wrong place. I haven't taken it apart to check but i remember the top metal piece of the strut was spinning like it was on ball bearings and I think it was because the "washer" wasn't there to hold it steady. Does anybody know if this would be damaging in any way? It's been fine so far but I like putting things back together the way they're suppose to be.
